I'm looking for a new job! :kittywave:

👷‍♀️ I can build software for your business (mainly in Rust, but I pick up new things quickly), or help you make sense of your existing software. I’m familiar with networking (I run AS213185 to experiment with BGP, OSPF and such), railway open data, and a bit of embedded stuff too (schematic/PCB design in KiCad, embedded Rust).

✨ Recently, I've tracked London Underground trains (and given a talk about it), reverse-engineered UK rail tickets, and built some hardware to make LED panels work. I have a website at eta.st with more stuff, too!

🌐 I'm looking for hybrid jobs (not fully remote) in the UK, but I could be tempted away to the Netherlands or Germany for the right role. I'm also open to contracting and part-time projects!

✉️ Send me an email at job@eta.st if you're interested (or want my CV)

Boosts appreciated! ❤️ #getfedihired

Feb/8/2024: Google announces Gemini Advanced

Feb/8/2028: Google announces the retirement of Gemini Advanced with one month's notice, as all other AI services are dead or Google found that the ad-supported AI model works better.

Killed by Google adds Gemini Advanced to its webpage.

The end.

If you're appalled at the consultant-driven dismantling of American higher education, consider personally boosting enrollment figures in a "useless" subject. Astronomy! Art history! Russian lit! Ecology!

You can go as low-effort/money as auditing a three-credit online course at your local community college, or as high-effort as finding a low-residency masters' program.

Genuinely, if you believe making time/space for these things is nationally important... don't you owe it to yourself?

It's strange, but I feel the overarching lesson of Twitter was "how snarkily funny can I be" whereas on Mastodon it's "how kind and generous can I be" and good lord I am so here for this change, even if it results in less clickbait and "engagement"

@inkican @jwz BlueSky was founded by, and is still connected to (despite furious denials from BlueSky advocates) Jack Dorsey. Dorsey is the billionaire that:

- pushed for Twitter to be sold to Musk
- resisted attempts to prevent Twitter from being a cesspool before the sale arguing it was cEnSoRsHiP.
- Is a cryptobro, one of many red flags

I believe jwz's primary complaint is that people who are signing up for BlueSky are putting trust in Dorsey when he's proven to be completely untrustworthy

Most of the people going to BlueSky in the first place are doing so because of actions taken by... Jack Dorsey (namely the destruction of Twitter by selling it to Musk.)

(Worth adding BlueSky has yet to make good on its promise to federate, not even using its proprietary AT protocol, and as far as I'm aware there's not even a reference implementation of the latter available. So at this point, it has all the lock-in problems all the others do, despite their claims to the contrary.)

I just peer-reviewed a forensic analysis in a case.

The suspect mailed a package with a hidden Apple AirTag in it to a victim's old home address.

The package was forwarded to her new (and formerly safe) address....

Might be good to warn DV victims of unexpected mail.

Are there any Matrix groups or IRC groups for things related to AWS? Interested in sharing ideas and also asking some questions too.

Proposed Wage Theft Legislation Would Strip Violators of Their Ability to Do Business in #NewYork

“We did not have the data to understand the scale of the issue in New York State until the ProPublica and Documented series came out last year,” state Sen. Jessica Ramos said.

I remember when I saw computer generated images on a screen for the first time.

I am guessing it was 1978 or 1979. We went to pick up my older brother from somebody’s house, and they were playing Pong.

I only saw for a couple minutes, but I couldn’t stop thinking about it. It was amazing and compelling and absolutely beautiful.

When I make things, it’s my hope that maybe you will feel something a tiny bit like what I felt that night 45 years ago.

Every member of congress's salary should be the median yearly income of the people they represent, and any monies received outside of their salary is taxed at 100%.

It’s going to be a very exciting decade for anyone interested in Greek history and mythology. This is amazing.

In my hands is my first iPod. Steve Jobs is smiling at me. Everybody at the Apple Store is smiling.

I take off my Apple Vision. I am back in the retirement home. Nobody has visited me for 12 years. I put it back on.

I hold my iPod. Everybody in the Apple Store is smiling.

Good news, everyone! we finally created something more mesmerizing than hypnotoad. This is civilization's greatest achievement to date. camp2.rectangle.zone/index.php

Heads up: the AWS IPv4 rental charge will kick in at $43 per year per IP from 1st February 2024. 😏
