RT @AshleyLatke
“Global online safety regulators network” from the terribly flawed folks in Australia seems to be a really bad idea

All of this “online safety” legislation has been directly anti-sex, censorious and builds in an “age check” biometrics grift and dangerous surveillance twitter.com/justinhendrix/stat

@jeffjarvis
It's deeply frustrating watching my friends who ought to know better—journalists, tech policy people, etc.—acknowledging that Twitter's on the outs, but then getting excited about moving to yet another closed, proprietary platform.

We actioned almost 20K webpages of coerced “self-generated” sexual abuse content of 7-10 year-old children in first half of 2022. The majority of it, girls. This Int Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women & Girls learn more about the work we do. iwf.org.uk

Good news, we'll have a major letter signed by dozens of #LGBTQ #humanrights #privacy #digitalrights #civilliberties #racialjustice and #freeexpression organizations out on Monday opposing #KOSA the poorly named (and terribly drafted) "Kids Online Safety Act."

Top Democrats were trying to sneak it into a must-pass spending package. Hopefully this is enough opposition to stop them. HMU if your *organization* wants to sign on (not individuals at this time)

Things are extremely scary over on the birdsite, and I don't pretend to have all the answers. But I do know that calling for Apple and Google to outright ban apps used by millions of people for all kinds of important things is ... playing with fire and not in line with global human rights. Pushing for moderate at that level of the stack is not going to lead to more safety for LGBTQ+ people or other marginalized folks. It's gonna get us censored & silenced. Sending love to my ppl. I get it

@danhon there's a feature request (suggested by me) to add integration (possibly opt-in?) of PhotoDNA to help moderators detect *known* CSAM if anyone attempts to upload it. (although thankfully, I have not seen any CSAM in my time here on Mastodon) github.com/mastodon/mastodon/i

@dansup @pixelfed is this the ios app or the android app? (as an android user, I'm obviously very eager about the android app)

I own activitypub.io, activitypub.network and activitypub.social and want to put them to use somehow.

Some ideas I have:
- activitypub.io: technical guides and implementations
- activitypub.network: server list
- activitypub.social: community group (when groups are ready)

These would be community maintained, and ultimately depend on @cwebber approval, I'd prefer to work with her on these or transfer domains to her rather than them sit unused!

I ❤️ ActivityPub

If you know anyone working on an ActivityPub project and they need any advice/feedback/help or want to spread the word, tell them to DM me! I am more than willing to help or spread awareness! #activitypub #fediverse

@SenSchumer and the people behind the /#kidsOnlineSafetyAct have made it clear that they don't care about kids or people; they don't care how much damage this is going to do to LGBT youth by censoring valuable LGBT information and sex education resources. @EFF @ACLU twitter.com/evan_greer/status/

@pixelfed I hope you have integration with Microsoft's PhotoDNA to help detect if people are trying to upload (known) illegal images

re: Qoto drama

@demitasse@pleroma.narrativerry.xyz @Gargron @stux @freemo @peterdrake @trinsec thanks for using a homophobic slur so that I can report you for being a piece of shit :)

@mmasnick I wonder if spam filters are more likely to flag short messages and artificially making the message longer is a way to counter that? That's the only possible reason I can think of!

Updated Quick Scan Server (Instance) List

Here is an updated listing of the top 120 most popular popular Mastodon instances >>>

docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d

This is not to suggest that smaller instances are bad. In fact many smaller instance are dealing with the wave of new migrants from the #birdsite better than some larger instances. For a complete list of instances check out >>> mastodon.fediverse.observer/li

Also, a warning to others looking for a #Twitter alternative:

DO NOT use Tribel Social. I looked into it and their Privacy Policy is bad. They collect a lot of unnecessary information from your device, including IMEI numbers.

#Newbies, it might we worth passing that along to your friends. I know a few accounts on Twitter are really pushing it as an alternative.

Every police force everywhere will always want to employ facial recognition, backdoor decryption and armed robots. It’s on us as citizens to make sure they don’t get them.

The #OnlineSafetyBill "threatens 40 million users of WhatsApp and other messengers with constant surveillance of their private messages. It will create a culture of everyday censorship that will disproportionately remove content from vulnerable, disadvantaged, and minority communities while claiming to protect them.”

@jim calls for a complete rethink of the Bill for it to be fit for purpose.
