As far as I can tell, the politicians are straight up lying about engaging with the groups asking to shelve the bill.

The new version is not better, it’s still extremely flawed, broadly targeting speech and using liability as a lever, which will backfire just like SESTA twitter.com/evan_greer/status/

With talk growing about going back to 🐦 since man child 🤡 is talking about "not being CEO" (also revealed in his now public texts weeks ago), this excellent article by @mmasnick from 2019 about building protocols & not platforms needs to be surfaced again to avoid the social silos that dominate much of the internet that lack portability & interoperability 👇🏾

When I tell parents that secretly spying on their kids' internet activities is not a great look, they ask me "Well, what SHOULD I do?"

There is no all-purpose parenting answer, but this report from Malwarebytes outlines many of the key considerations: malwarebytes.com/resources/att

there's not really a winner there; we'll end up with rules around AI that make ethical uses impossible and still screw over small creators, would be my guess.

Totally random, but here's some non-Twitter ways to keep up with our work in the coming months fftf.link/tree

Quit trying to gatekeep how others use #Mastodon / the #Fediverse. That’s not what this place is about.

(I do realize the irony of this post, but it still stands.)

"Twitter rival Mastodon has grown eight times its size in a matter of weeks, going from approximately 300,000 users in October to 2.5 million in November, according to a blog post by the platform’s founder, Eugen Rochko": As Twitter backlash grows, rival Mastodon reaches 2.5 million monthly users | CNN Business cnn.com/2022/12/20/tech/mastod

I could care less about the "crypto industry," but I care deeply about preserving basic rights like the right to code, the right to contribute to open source software projects, and the right to privacy including financial privacy.

That's why I oppose misguided legislation like this. Crack down on grifters and scams and centralized exchanges and wall street, not privacy tools and self-hosted wallets.

An irregular reminder that calling this place "Mastodon" has a bit similar energy as saying "I just sent you a GMail."

"Fediverse" (or "fedi") is a better term.

Mastodon is just one of many software projects that talk to each other to create this multi-instance social network:

(kudos to @axbom for this fantastic infographic!)

There are blogs, Reddit-like communities, video instances and many more, all part of fedi.

The reason the right-wing use the word "gr**mer" is because they actually can't get away with using "p*d*ph*le" or "ch*ld m*l*ster." Those are the words they WANT to use, but they know that those accusations would make them vulnerable to being proven wrong in a court of law.

@taylorlorenz this maybe? Seems like mastodon doesn't necessarily have as granular notification settings as I would like
