This article, yet again, suggests that Elon's Twitter is in for a world of hurt. He's slashing the legal team, including his main legal advisor, just as he's deliberately taking on that much more liability, deliberately trying to not pay money he owes... nytimes.com/2022/12/13/technol

You can be concerned about CSAM and still be wary of bycatch censorship of legally protected speech, just as you can be concerned about terrorism and also be wary of Patriot Act surveillance state.

Possibly my biggest complaint about is this (see attached screenshot). Being able to see someone's followers on while browsing your own instance, I think, would help with discovering people to follow

It looks like Apple is finally going to allow third-party app stores, which is a pretty big win. Why are they doing it? Upcoming EU requirements that will hit in 2024.

To all mastodon admins:

Hi! I’m Evan Phoenix, the primary author of puma, the ruby webserver that powers mastodon!

Please reply or DM me if you need tuning help! I’ve got no officiation with the mastodon, just want to see you succeed!

(Quick Tip: set WEB_CONCURRENCY to core count * 1.5 and then tune MAX_THREADS. High thread values will see diminishing returns!)

“The LGBTQ+ community is actively under attack, and it’s unthinkable that Democrats are considering advancing a bill that will further harm us and disproportionately target queer and trans young people.” buff.ly/3OKKKoL

In a meeting and just reviewed the weekly flu activity map for the US and DAMN people. If you're not masking up out in the world right now, you WILL get sick. Haven't seen it look like this in a long time. cdc.gov/flu/weekly/usmap.htm

In 1933, Nazis led torchlit mob into the square and looted the library of the adjoining -Universitat. 40,000 people cheered as they burned over 20,000 books by mainly Jewish, communist, liberal and social-critical authors. Many years later, a panel of glass was set into the ground to mark the spot. It’s a window. Leaning over you can look into a room below. The room is white, lined from floor to ceiling with plain shelves—an empty library. The sort of world we’d live in if the fanatics had won.

Hey @elonmusk@twitter.com, it seems like it's no longer possible to have a Ukrainian number verify a Twitter account/two-factor authentication. Ukraine is not in your list of countries, see our screenshot.

It's vital for us to keep showing the world what's going on in our country.

NEW: Twitter has disbanded its "Trust and Safety Council."

Members included expert groups working to tackle harassment, child exploitation, and human rights.

"Many bad things happen in households but we do not require people to live in houses with glass walls"

David Davis MP (UK) nails the key problem with the #OnlineSafetyBill – the powers massively overreach into our rights to #privacy and #freedomofexpression without proper balance.

If Tumblr does join the fediverse and adopt support similar to Mastodon it will likely overwhelm most instances in terms of activity processing/media storage and moderation

In addition, due to their prominence they will attract bad actors leading to them blocking instances, further fragmenting the fediverse

It paints a picture where they only federate with huge/trusted instances, a curated collection of centralized instances

Hope I’m wrong, encouraging corporations to adopt warrants caution

The #OnlineSafetyBill returns to Committee today (UK). The Bill is disproportionate in trying to be a silver bullet for all social ills.

Adam Afriyie MP raised the point in the debate last week that there are other ways of catching criminals without breaking end-to-end encryption.

#e2ee #privacy #encryption

Musk is a one man harassment factory though; huge footprint on social media and in mainstream press means he has the ability to create these firestorms single-handedly.
