Not only about free speech, freedom of expression is also a right to receive information without interference.

The Online Safety Bill threatens both. Prior restraint provisions will wipe out speech before it takes place, shrinking the public realm.

@simplelogin I voted browser extension. But honestly I mostly just manually type: website-name@custom.domain

My feed 3 weeks ago: Bluesky isn’t using ActivityPub, this is unnecessary fragmentation. We already have a perfectly good protocol.

Instagram: Adopts ActivityPub.

My feed today: Noo big tech isn’t allowed to use our open source protocol. We must defederate them.

@asahi95 anyone that wants to be a part of the fediverse should be welcomed with open arms (mostly referring to individuals). If they choose a facebook-owned instance -- I *refuse* to call facebook "meta"-- that's their choice.

⚠️ The Online Safety Bill would "make Britain a global role model for repressive regimes."

@Mer__edith, President of @signalapp, calls out the proposals that'll lead to "government-mandated mass surveillance applications on every UK smartphone."

@koyu I did not know the 2DS has mismatched screen sizes. I hate it.

The Online Safety Bill will mean platforms use upload filters. They'll intercept content while the user is uploading it, then check if there's a match for illegal content.

It'll be a form of surveillance on users posting to the platform, 24/7.

The government is using the Online Safety Bill to limit awareness of small boat crossings and the rights of migrants. The Bill aims to have content that 'assists' illegal immigration swept from social media.

Upload filters aren't well-equipped to pick out illegal content, which are complex and context-dependent decisions. The high error rates and false positives will see lawful posts censored.

@Marcus @neil and now I suddenly have the idea to use @simplelogin email aliases for signing up to newsletters

"Applying this logic to the adult entertainment industry, it likely means that because the vast majority of content offered by a site like Pornhub is legal, the illegal use of such a platform by a third-party to circulate CSAM and material that the platform has no hand in producing or publishing doesn’t necessarily create liability for Pornhub, social media sites, or other platforms which rely on the protection of Section 230." ynot.com/supreme-court-section

It should go without saying, but I’ll say it: unauthorized use of a warrantless surveillance system is inherently dangerous and intrusive, even if you don’t like the people who were targeted with it.

The state of Florida put this family through sadistic torture to force the birth of an infant with no chance of survival.

Will the state pay the medical bills that their "insurance" rejected? Yeah, right.

Cruelty on top of cruelty.

Eventually you'll defederate so many instances you'll have the perfect community of yourself.

"Since 2010, France has monitored and stored data on millions of internet users as part of anti-piracy scheme featuring warning letters, fines, and ISP disconnections. Europe's highest court will soon decide whether the program is permissible under EU law. Digital rights groups insist that as a general surveillance and data retention scheme, it violates fundamental rights."
