If you’re new to Mastodon, you may at some point find that you’re being pressured to put your posts behind a content warning (CW). Although CWs make sense for things like images of violence or nudity, some people are bullying others to put CWs on discussions of politics, racism, etc.
Please know that you should not feel pressured to obey these individuals. They do not speak for all. If someone does not want to be exposed to these topics, Mastodon gives them all the tools they need to avoid them, such as keyword filters and the ability to block or mute people who are posting things they don’t like.

After just a week, our new ads aimed at people who encountered CSAM by accident and want to report it have been seen by over 200 people, with nearly 2 dozen clicking for more information on how to file a report.

Surveillance Doesn’t Make Kids Safe. Tell your lawmakers and \@SenSchumer to keep #KOSA off must-pass legislation. fightforthefuture.org/actions/

The Israeli government + private companies like NSO Group are exporting mass surveillance tech tested on Palestinians, threatening civil society globally. Check out the visual on #PegasusSpyware from \@visualizingpal, \@alhaq_org, #MindTheGap Consortium, \@BisanResearch.

@pixelfed is there a way to import (json) from an instagram archive?

@freemo

Unfortunately, this is just the start. I have been saying this IRL for a while. Like all systems, Mastodon will devolve into into a hierarchical structure of reach. The idea of choice, like instance admins choosing to block certain servers will only be a choice in writing. A consortium of servers will develop a set of rules (kind of starting now). This group will have their own set of standards that will apply to all groups they federate with. As their group becomes larger, the group will defederate more instances. This will start with smaller, new instances. These new instances will comply the new standard, outside Mastodon's rules as a whole, out of fear of irrelevancies. Eventually, once this consortium of instances hits a large percentage of the userbase (maybe 10-25%) they will apply these rules to larger instances. Those that do not follow the groups standards will be defederated. From here, 2 things could happen. 1) Most everyone adopts these new standards, leaving a fringe portion of instances, not federated with many, or 2) the federation will fracture into 2 radical sides (sound familiar) who do not federate, and are just huge echo chambers.

Either of these results are boring, unimaginative, and unoriginal. The only path I can see not leading to this would be mastodon.social staying neutral. But with pressure, like all systems in jeopardy of losing power and influence, my guess is they too will cave.

All ideas of Mastodon being a place of broad ideas and freedom may be true now to some degree, but will shown to be illusion in the near future.

As always, this is just my opinion, and it doesn't mean shit. I hope I'm wrong.

@Gargron @khird @trinsec

@freemo @Gargron @khird @trinsec I think sticking with the open federation policy is good, making it up to the user who to block is the correct way to approach the problem. BTW: Is the Twitter migration to Mastodon about the need for free speech or censorship?

After using Mastodon for just one day, I gotta feeling this platform is going to give Twitter a run for its $8.

Corporate moderation of content is messy.

AI moderation of content is messy.

Community moderation of content is messy.

Adding millions of new users to a small community over the course of a couple weeks is going to lead to all kinds of conflict, overreaction, and confusion. Assume good faith, try to resolve issues in good faith, and use the robust tools #Mastodon offers to make changes if you can't resolve things.

Mastodon is kinda like stumbling into a shelter after a major natural disaster destroyed your town and running into people from your neighbourhood, isn’t it?
Hey! It’s you! You’re here!! You made it!!

The exodus continues...

Another 100,000 new users joined mastodon on Saturday.
Mastodon stats from Nov 19, 2022: 7,230,521 accounts, +108,944 in the last day, +582,363 in the last week

@MattHodges @mmasnick I agree. Feels like with quote tweets and the algorithm, “hot takes” and ridicule are propagated and promoted on the site. The likes and retweets stack up to reinforce the behavior, even when the behavior is being rude or abusing other people

It remains mindboggling to me how many people on the other site feel the need to constantly bash Mastodon. I didn't join a bunch of other social media sites, but I didn't feel the desire to mock them either. It's kinda weird, because it includes people I normally get along with as well.

Breaking my self-imposed Twitter silence to offer some context for last night's mass shooting at Club Q in Colorado Springs. Since early 2021, the right has increasingly mobilized against the queer community, with drag shows being a particular focal point. countingcrowds.org/2022/09/30/

Carol Leigh has died of cancer. She was an American activist for sex workers' rights since the 1970s and never stopped ighting against repression, criminalization and discrimination. She was the one to first use and popularize the term "sex work". She certainly made some history!
On her vimeo channel there are many videos from the past to watch. #Sexwork

Here is the thing...

I don't think ANYONE should be banned or punished forever

But people have to admit that what they did was wrong, do something to make amends, and remain accountable...redemption is a process.

Trump keeps doubling down on denial, uses his platform to hurt people, never apologizes for anything, and never changes his behaviors.
