@GottaLaff it completely baffles me that anyone would try to grow anything IN A FUCKING DESERT

Then again, it also completely baffles me that anyone would choose to live in a desert instead of a more habitable location (like the midwest)

"The premise of the bill assumes that companies aren’t reporting the child sex abuse material (CSAM) they find, but there’s little to no evidence to support that claim, and the law already requires them to report it. The problem seems to be that law enforcement isn’t doing much with that information." techdirt.com/2023/04/18/earn-i @mmasnick

"According to the US Department of Justice, adolescents who commit sex offenses account for up to one-third of all sex crimes. In some states, children as young as 8 years old of been placed on sex offender registries." azrsol.org/did-you-know-your-c

Child sexual abuse is harmful and unacceptable, and no amount of "normalizing pedophilia" will ever change that. It's time to drop the fearmongering and redouble our efforts as a society to support evidence-based child protection efforts.

⚠️ The Online Safety Bill returns to the House of Lords (UK) today for its Committee stage.

We call on the Lords to support Lord Clement-Jones’ amendment that would remove private messaging platforms from the ambit of the disproportionate spy clause. #DontScanMe

“It’s very important the judge has put a clear stop to attempts at circumventing the right to freedom of expression, by way of so-called child protection… It shows one cannot remove an artwork from its context.” news.artnet.com/art-world/miri

Together with fellow encrypted messaging services, we urge the UK government to rethink the Online Safety Bill, respect the right to privacy, and avoid mass surveillance: threema.ch/bp/online-safety-bi

Politicians who have refused to pass laws banning child marriage, while passing laws that authorize genital inspections of trans children, don't get to hold the moral high ground on child sexual abuse.

Why are conservatives falsely claiming that a UN report validates child sexual abuse? Perhaps because the report actually says that abortion and consensual sex work should be decriminalized.

I'm going to jump off @mmasnick post here concerning @onthemedia going well out of its way to condemn Mastodon as a failure in this week's episode. I've been a fan of OTM for years, but this is a surprisingly short-sighted take from a program that USUALLY gets it.

This place is ONLY a failure if your overwhelming motivation is passive and unthinking eyeballs.

But this represents a false metric.

If you consider the engagement ratio on Twitter compared to here, the Fediverse is clearly more successful -- in that you'll have a HIGHER percentage of ACTIVE users ENGAGING with your posts. Hell, even an obscure creative weirdo like me has been surprised by how TIGHTER the bonds are here and how much GREATER the level of engagement is.

On the Media obviously has to answer to WNYC. And big numbers -- meaning a total representing active and INACTIVE -- is the false metric. Media orgs need to readjust the numbers on what qualifies as success.
