On the topic of new #Mastodon arrivals or those who tried it and are returning.
IMO you get the best engagement by:
1. Following a ton of people
2. Following a ton of hashtags
3. Posting stuff with hashtags
If someone had 5k+ followers on the bird site, and they turn up and post: "Well, I'm here" or "Well, I'm back"...
... I just don't think that strategy is gonna deliver a good experience here.

1/ The biggest tip I'd like to give newcomers to the Fediverse (aside from the standard stuff you like 'fill out your bio/pick an avi') is this: don't expect it to be perfect.
Yes, you will periodically run into people who are annoying/rude here too. They're everywhere. It's part of life. Yes, the way it works will sometimes frustrate you. Every platform is the same in that sense. Yes, you have to put time into getting established & learning how to use it. All communities are the same there.
If there was one piece of advice I could give to new Mastodon users who are finding their feeds quiet or boring, it is to follow as many people and hashtags as you can. This is not Twitter; there is no algorithm, it is not going to fill your feed with stuff it thinks you like. You have to curate it yourself. Once you do, though, it's so much more vibrant and rewarding than Twitter has been for a year. #TwitterMigration #Twitter
Fact-checking Elon Musk’s incorrect statement about #farming and #climate change: https://factcheck.afp.com/doc.afp.com.33LP6PR
1) #Agriculture, #forestry, and other #landuse account for ~1/4 of recent annual GHG emissions.
2) Factoring in the broader #food system brings the estimate to ~1/3 of emissions.
3) #Deforestation & other land-use change account for >1/4 of CO2 emitted since 1750.
4) Keeping warming below 1.5 degrees C is impossible without changing food production and consumption.

"If you don’t worry about it now, it’s too late later on. We are passing on extremely grave problems for our children when the time to solve the problems is now"

Assisted #HarborLab today by bringing a Nissan Leaf (2015 24wh battery) from #Poughkeepsie to #LIC. Learned much about #EV charging which will be applicable when I rent a car for a few days and they hand me an EV.
The rental agencies are bulking up on EVs. They are much easier to maintain.
If you only charge from home, this is all irrelevant. However, you may find yourself renting one day.
Its amazing how shitty and difficult the infrastructure is. But this is the fruit of capitalism.

New to the #Fediverse? Here are some things that work(ed) for me:
- Coming from Twitter? Find your tweeps (still working): https://fedifinder.glitch.me
- Follow bots like @icymi_law (for law content) & @colarusso_algo (for general geekery) They can help you discover good follows & either flesh out a sparse timeline or find the signal in the noise.
- Find new friends (based on who your follows follow): https://followgraph.vercel.app
- Use lists! Mine include: folks I know IRL, bots (See above), etc.
A big welcome to everyone new to #Mastodon! 👋
You’re going to like it here.
Unlike #Twitter, this place isn’t set up as a race for RTs & likes & feels more like an ongoing conversation. Engagement is high & on the whole, there’s less outrage & more thoughtful content. I’ve been enjoying the chance to get to meet interesting new folks.
Tip: Start with an #introduction & share your interests. @feditips is a helpful follow to get oriented too.
