X, formally known as Twitter, is suing the independent researchers behind the report that documented a rise in neo-Nazi and anti-LGBTQ hate speech on the platform since Elon Musk's takeover. The nonprofit, which has previously published reports on Facebook and TikTok, has never before been subjected to legal action by a tech company it has reviewed. The center's CEO Imran Ahmed says he's concerned for the future of independent research if X wins its case.

Oh wow! I discovered if someone mentions your #Fediverse handle for your #WordPress blog (if the #ActivityPub plugin is enabled), you receive an email alert along with a permalink to the post.

Example: @darnelltv

This is great (I wish #WriteFreely had something like this), but I wish the notifications came from the app (either WordPress or the dreaded #Jetpack app) & not via email, as that can be overwhelming.

"Stigma doesn’t happen overnight. Nobody wakes up one day and says, 'I think I’m going to have terrible opinions towards this minority or that minority, just because.'" prostasia.org/blog/fighting-stigma/

We encourage Twitter/X to maintain their years-long "zero tolerance" policy for images and videos of child sexual abuse. Allowing individuals who have posted such content to continue using the service as normal puts more survivors at risk of harm. mashable.com/article/x-twitter

"Lately, parents are reporting that their changes haven't gone into effect, and kids are getting extra time on their apps or even facing no restrictions on adult content." businessinsider.com/apple-user

"Last month, the Stanford Cyber Policy Center reported that Twitter had been letting through known CSAM that should have been caught with PhotoDNA, which identifies previously detected images and shares them with internet companies for blocking." washingtonpost.com/technology/

"While we cannot stop the perpetual march of technological development, we can control how it affects our lives and our children's lives. We do have control over how much or how little information we voluntarily share online and with whom, so let’s use it!" prostasia.org/?na=v&nk=18015-0

"If it passes, the Online Safety Bill will be a huge step backwards for global privacy, and democracy itself. Requiring government-approved software in peoples’ messaging services is an awful precedent." eff.org/deeplinks/2023/07/uk-g

This is why we warn against conflating real images of actual abuse with stories. The result is harassment against artists, storytellers, and even survivors who speak out about their experiences.

"Second, use those parental control features! That is why they are there! But it also helps to let your kid know that you are using these tools, so they don’t feel like their privacy is invaded." prostasia.org/?na=v&nk=18015-0

It's not unheard of for bad actors to spread harmful content on popular social media platforms. Thankfully, you can help us stop them in just four quick steps.

@evacide I'm starting to think that "personal online safety" needs to be a class taught in K-12, updated every couple of years.

Banning encryption, restricting free speech, these are all things politicians declare "will protect children" but the reality is that these things will harm everyone, including children (especially the LGBTQ+ children)

"Existing law already requires online service providers who have actual knowledge of 'apparent' CSAM on their platforms to report that content to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), which is essentially a government entity." eff.org/deeplinks/2023/07/ndaa

"What can we - as parents - do to support our children's online experiences, while at the same time ensuring they are doing it in a safe and secure environment?" prostasia.org/?na=v&nk=18015-0

Let me tell you the secret of the "Everything App".

It's real, it's not called X, and it's about 33 years old. It's called a Web Browser.

Despite a decade of walled gardens trying hard to ruin it, you can still do pretty much any task you need on the web.

You can even make websites into apps with Progressive Web Apps (two clicks on WordPress).

The everything app is old, and under siege daily. But it works, it's resilient, and it's magical.

What's really nuts is that if Musk wanted to try expand into payments and banking and such (sure, trust Musk with your finances!), the way to do it would be to bring those under the #Twitter brand -- one of the most recognizable brands in any language on the planet, a brand that created universal terms like "to tweet", a brand name among brand names known to billions of people. And he tosses it away because of his adolescent fixation with X.
