@trinsec

I have to say im a bit disgusted (not with you) that us taking a hard stance on protecting our members of the LGBTQ community from violence has been twisted and distorted, and blatantly lied about in an attempt to make us look bad.

When the vast majority of the fediverse were silencing the LGBTQ and they were migrating to us int he thousands I knew what we were doing was right... when those servers who lost their user base tried to distort and lie about the situation, evne as a minority, it hurt, but I did what was right anyway.

To actually see people years later buying those same lies when they are so easily debunked... that causes me to loose hope for humanity. You made no attempt to ask us about the situation or learn what the other side of the story was, talk about the features, understand why they arent privacy violating at all (they do not give you access to toots people dont give permission for you to see)... People need to do better, they need to fact check this nonsense rather than just get spoon fed and then repeat the disinformation again and repeat the nasty cycle.

That sense of exhilaration when you see a Twitter friend join Mastodon and you're like HI OMG, MAYBE IT'S HAPPENING

So Elon Musk’s birdsite officially has the most restrictive speech policies that the bird site has ever had in its entire history mediaite.com/tech/twitter-bloc

Some things I learned about #accessibility and Mastodon this week.

• Lower case hashtags like #this are fine when the hashtag is one word.

• Mastodon encourages use of the superbly named #CamelCase for hashtags of two words or more. Named because of its capital letter humps! 🐫

• This helps screen readers announce the words correctly. Screen readers are used by blind and visually impaired people, and those who find it easier having information read out.

• Remember alt text for images too!

If you're looking for an awesome alternative for #Instagram be sure to checkout #Pixelfed!

This is like Mastodon, also self-hosted and does 'federate' with the #Fediverse.

You can join our on pixey.org or catgram.co

and follow from Mastodon on @stux@pixey.org and @George & @Washy :meow:

If you want to setup your own checkout pixelfed.org :pixelfed:

I was hoping to release the new pixelfed.org a few days ago

The problem was the new server directory, it's really complex!

I wanted to make this super simple for server admins to submit & update their listings which meant I had to build a submission queue that is integrated into the Pixelfed admin dashboard and also caches (avatar, header, post) images on S3 on our side.

Anyways, it's almost ready and I can't wait 😁

If you enjoy #mastodon you should know you can do the same with your chats. You don't need Google or Facebook.
Check @matrix for the details on federated chat!

RT @Tuinslak@twitter.com

Very happy that federated systems like Matrix.org and Fediverse have a chance of survival and could actually make the internet sane again.

Over on the birdsite — do i have this lingo right? 😏 — a sex worker friend brings up a good question: what are the most SW friendly Mastodon instances? Anyone know?

RT @DecrimSex: IF IT DOESN’T FIGHT TRAFFICKING, WHAT DOES SESTA/FOSTA DO?
By endangering both sex workers and victims of human trafficking, SESTA/FOSTA has inadvertently encouraged the kind of abuse it sought to eradicate. t.co/Q1jg5u9qin

Hi. We should probably post an . We're Prostasia Foundation, a new kind of child protection organization. I think I'll let our About page (found at prostasia.org/about) us:

Protecting children from sexual abuse is a cause that everyone can unite behind. Often, however, the measures we take to combat child sexual abuse (CSA) are less effective than they should be, because they are driven by emotion rather than evidence. In striving to protect children from abuse, we may end up harming them and others.
Prostasia Foundation addresses this problem by…

- helping to fund sound scientific research on CSA prevention.
- engaging with diverse stakeholders whose voices are not normally heard.
- addressing the human rights impacts of child protection laws and policies.
- communicating the results of our research and engagement to policymakers, platforms, and the public.

This uniquely balanced, rights-respecting and evidence-based approach to CSA prevention allows us not only to protect children from abuse, but also to reduce the separate harms caused to children and others by our society’s predominantly reactive child protection agenda.

We accept donations. You can find more info about that here: prostasia.org/donate/

And, as of 2022 we are all-volunteer run. You can find more information about joining our all-volunteer staff here (LGBTQ+ people and sex workers are welcome and strongly encouraged to apply!): forum.prostasia.org/t/prostasi

OK since people are nice & 🍑 is apparently welcome, here’s an intro: Hi! I’m a platform governance researcher specialising on censorship of nudity, shadowbanning, flagging & online abuse. Here you’ll find me talking about this from an academic perspective & as a #poledance instructor and censored content creator with 7+ yrs’ experience in social media strategy + PR. Read my paper, 1 of the 1st studies on shadowbanning, here: tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10

Having been here since 2016, I can tell you there is definitely no such thing as a consensus on usage of content warnings on the fediverse. It's a decentralized network that doesn't belong to any one party, so by definition there is no single culture on it. Different corners have different expectations and customs.

Tiny Mastodon newbie tip 🐘:

If there are some topics you would rather not see in your timelines anymore, for example a certain Birdsite, you can use Filters! :birdsite:

HOW TO ❓

1. On desktop, go to Preferences > Filters.

2. Click the “Add new filter" button on the upper right.

3. Then you can add things like “twitter.com/” or “Twitter” or “Birdsite” or something else or all of the above!

4. You can even set an expiration date if you think you'll want to hear about it again later on.

5. You will see these posts hidden as for Content Warnings and you will be able to click on “Show More” to see them OR you can enable “Drop instead of hide” or “Hide completely” in the options to not see anything at all in your timelines.

6. Enjoy! 😌

Really interesting to read about the history of switter.ai, a sex work-friendly Mastodon instance that closed in March of this year.

See here:
switter.at/about

At time of closure, Switter was the 3rd biggest Mastodon instance in the fediverse with 435,490 users.
