The "Kids Online Safety Act," or #KOSA, has a lot of the same problems as disastrous bills like SESTA/FOSTA and the EARN IT Act. Oh boy. A popular science piece I wrote for @ProstasiaInc is now live. Found out via the bird site. Given that site’s willingness to tolerate #hatespeech, #ViolentThreats rhetoric, and all out threats, I can’t foresee this ending well. The piece I wrote is about #sexualabuse #prevention and I stand by it.
The thesis of the piece is simple: we need to stop the performative rage and actually put our money where our mouths are. #protect #children.

RED ALERT, please boost! We got word this morning that Senate leadership has cut a deal to include #JCPA in the must-pass #NDAA.

This is a terrible, Rupert Murdoch backed bill that essentially creates a "link tax" and would make Big Tech and big media cartels even more intertwined. AND, apparently what Schumer "traded" for it was ... the vaccine mandate for the US military. I kid you not.

The JCPA is framed as a bill to "help journalism" but even many journalists have come out against it, knowing that their private equity owners will just pocket the cash. Similarly, part of the law would *require* internet companies to link to misinfo sources AND to pay them for the privilege.

It goes against everything that the web is supposed to stand for while enriching those destroying newspaper journalism.

So it appears that Congress may have decided to include the incredibly dangerous JCPA in the must pass NDAA today. The JCPA is effectively a "link tax" that will force internet companies to pay cash to private equity firms who are buying up newspapers and firing most of the staff.

It's a horrible bill for so many reasons. Even the Copyright Office says it's not useful or needed.
