"Many bad things happen in households but we do not require people to live in houses with glass walls"
David Davis MP (UK) nails the key problem with the #OnlineSafetyBill – the powers massively overreach into our rights to #privacy and #freedomofexpression without proper balance.
If Tumblr does join the fediverse and adopt support similar to Mastodon it will likely overwhelm most instances in terms of activity processing/media storage and moderation
In addition, due to their prominence they will attract bad actors leading to them blocking instances, further fragmenting the fediverse
It paints a picture where they only federate with huge/trusted instances, a curated collection of centralized instances
Hope I’m wrong, encouraging corporations to adopt warrants caution
The #OnlineSafetyBill returns to Committee today (UK). The Bill is disproportionate in trying to be a silver bullet for all social ills.
Adam Afriyie MP raised the point in the debate last week that there are other ways of catching criminals without breaking end-to-end encryption.
Musk is a one man harassment factory though; huge footprint on social media and in mainstream press means he has the ability to create these firestorms single-handedly.
even walsh and raichik took a while of agitating and building momentum to get bomb threats out there.
usually these campaigns escalate; they start with designated accounts on twitter and then get picked up by others in the network or get escalated to fox and carlson.
I liked this video "Dave Chappelle Just Humiliated Elon Musk…Accidentally, Blames "The Poors", Nurses Have The Ick, &" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m49BfAZUFJs
With all the new mastodon instances, I'm wondering how many admins are prepared for law enforcement (or other) agencies to come asking for people's information. In many cases the law enforcement is not entitled to this information, nor needs it, but how many admins know what to do and how to be sure they only respond to legitimate requests? And even what their own rights are in these situations? (Which will vary according to local laws.)
Experimented with reach on Twitter vs Mastodon by sending the same “canary” post on both platforms. I saw about the same engagement on both, despite having 4% the followers here.
Feels like the value of Twitter’s network is overestimated. If you’ve been there 10+ years, I bet most of your followers are inactive, and it’s harder than ever to get your tweets viewed because of the algorithmic timeline. Mastodon might be at the point where it delivers the same value. At least in my circles.

I can say from personal experience that it is perfectly possible to be autistic and just... be a person, without *ever* calling for the genocide of any marginalised groups at all. Indeed, even to be autistic and actually think genocide sounds like a bad thing to be avoided.

Indeed, we were one of the many groups that the Nazis wanted to eliminate.
I've no idea if Musk or West *are* autistic, but if they are it has as much to do with their fascist beliefs as does their shoe size.

A reminder, given that Kanye West is apparently claiming to be autistic as an excuse for him praising Hitler, and people are talking about Musk's apparent autism as an excuse for his far-right monstrosity, that autism doesn't actually make you into a Nazi.

Child monitoring applications can stifle child development. Parents should allow intellectual freedom instead of in-depth digital controls that put children in a petri dish under a microscope.
