Over on tiktok user @nomadicpancakes has observed a group of #bees that have learned to turn on the sensor on a water bottle filling station by walking over the target.
This is just the kind of thing bees are made to learn, they love targets and need to follow them when dealing with flowers all the time.
The interesting thing is that the bee who hits the target produces water for her sisters, herself less so. But these #eusocial girls seem to have that worked out!

A bit of outbreak in our snail lab 🐌 made me think about other snail researchers including @DenisMeuthen
Physella (Physa) acuta is one of the most abundant freshwater snail species. They often invade aquariums of any kind!! This species is considered beneficial to keep aquariums clean by eating off organic matters.
They have a lot interesting features in behaviour, genetics and more! And they are lefty (usually snails are right-handed 🌀)
When you look at some fern spores under a microscope and the spores are just like ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The #Mothening continues! For this the 6th day of #NationalMothWeek, I present a double feature of two of my favorite moths for utter fabulosity, The Rosy Maple#Moth, #dryocampa rubicunda, and the #IO moth, #Automeris io. Both just stunningly gorgeous.

Dinosaurs and mammals coexisted for ~ 230 million years. This shows a gobiconodontid mammal and psittacosaurid dinosaur locked in mortal combat.

More cardoon! It's early evening and the bees are buzzin'. I love sitting here in my chair watching them work. It's pretty cute actually, I don't know what I pictured them doing but it wasn't this: they fly into the purple fronds at speed and then roll around like they're showing off their moves. I'm only assuming they're doing bee work, it's entirely possibly this cardoon has become the world's first Bee Disco. Which I fully support btw.
Dolophones conifera, the "wrap around" spider did *nothing wrong* -- these spiders are literal wall flowers (branch buds?) and just want to curl up and not be noticed.
You can pick them up and they will run around in a panic until they find a place to "wrap" so they can feel safe.
They are unlikely to but, and if they do their venom isn't anything much.
Let them be poor things live in Australia with all kinds of dangerous creatures like bull ants and Australians.
I was enjoying a well-earned cuppa yesterday morning when I heard chirping. Then this little fella strolled out from behind a curtain and stood on the carpet, looking up at me - expectantly.
Apparently, it's a fledgling blackbird (but you can see they're related to thrushes at this stage). I gather they usually spend several days living on the ground after leaving the nest, before they learn to fly.
We put it out in the garden, where it got reunited with its parents later.
Bunker was one of four juvenile male #kakapo released into Maungatautari Sanctuary Mountain last week, in the first translocation to mainland NZ in living memory. We’ll monitor them closely in the coming weeks and months to ensure they settle in well. #conservation #returnofthekakapo
