@trinsec No I din't know that, and while I deleted and re-created that toot with the mention included, that is something I will probably forget in the future.

I really wish the software would just add the mention when you do the quote toot, like it did here when I did a normal reply to you. And then I also wish it would let you edit a toot rather than having to delete and re-create it (which is something you can do on some other Mastodon servers, but then most of them don't have the quote toot feature). But anyway thanks for the heads up!

@pipistrelle The feed jumps are something I have found in a greater or lesser degree in every reader I have tries so far, including the official web-based ones. It is ridiculous that you can't load more posts without it jumping forward or backward, causing you to lose your place.

I will tell you the same thing I have told everybody else I have come across that somehow has in in their mind that bicycles are an answer to anything. Only a small minority of the population really enjoys riding a on a regular basis. Beyond that small percentage, the people who ride bikes do so because they feel they have no other better options, or they only do it during the nice summer/fall days for recreation. The problems with are they do not shield you from the elements, they limit the range you can comfortably travel, it is nearly impossible to bring home a couple bags of groceries or any significant purchase from a bricks-and-mortar store on a bike, and they offer virtually no protection if you are in a collision with a larger vehicle.

But more to the point, when Americans feel threatened with the idea that they might be forced to use a bicycle for basic transportation, they blame the "damn liberals" (even though a lot of people who are liberal on most other issues hate the idea of using anything other than a car to get around with every fiber of their being, though they will not say that to their liberal friends). So if and when Americans get it in their heads that "the libs" are going to try to force them to give up their car and ride a bike, they will vote for the worst Republican running, because they know that one thing Republicans will NEVER do is try to take people out of their cars, they are too beholden to big oil. Nobody ever wants to talk about it this way, but I will bet that close elections have been lost because a certain percentage of voters sees the Democrats as the party that wants to take their car away, and they might even be right to feel that way about some of the far-left elements in the party. Viewed that way, it's not a win/win, it's a lose/lose because it helps elect people who will never expand and who will continue to support the fossil fuel industry, and who are just terrible people in general.

Can the NY Times do the "both sides" routine any more absurdly than this, regarding the Republicans' stated intention to sabotage the U.S. and global economies?

The Times' political coverage is consistent journalistic malpractice. It is not going to improve, and that's the saddest part of all.

"Okay," the teacher said. "You've got your groups. Time to find out which ones fail. All witches, please raise your hands."
No one raised a hand. The kids were confused and told the teacher he'd messed up the game. "Did I? Was anyone in Salem an actual witch? Or did everyone just believe what they'd been told?"

And that is how you teach kids how easy it is to divide a community.

A powerful lesson - source unknown.
A teacher tells her students, "I'm going to come around and whisper to each of you whether you're a witch or a regular person. Your goal is to build the largest group possible that does NOT have a witch in it. At the end, any group found to include a witch gets a failing grade."
The teens dove into grilling each other. One fairly large group formed, but most of the students broke into small, exclusive groups, turning away anyone they thought guilty.

As an expert on Social Security explained on my SiriusXM show: Don't listen to GOP's lies that Social Security is on the verge of bankruptcy. It has enough funding to pay 100% of benefits to at least 2035. SS could use some tweaks but the GOP opposed SS from the start and has long wanted to gut it. We can NOT let them! youtu.be/Ni-ii9gIt8w

It's weird, as a librarian, to have to have conversations with yourself about how far you would go. Would I be willing to go to jail for 30 days because I did the right thing and refused to take LGBTQ books off the shelves? Could my family afford me not working for 30 days for doing the right thing? Would I still have a job afterward? Would I be able to maintain my clearances to work with children if I had been to jail for 30 days for not removing allegedly sexually explicit books from shelves?

#Google could give EACH of the 12,000 employees it just laid off a $1,000,000 severance and still have $5 BILLION in profits left over from its last quarter alone (Q4 profits were $17B)

Instead, they just dumped 12,000 people onto the job market, which affects everyone, in a society in which such things as healthcare rely on employment.

When are we going to stop giving corporations that leech off us a free pass on civic responsibility?

Taliban has banned women from seeing male doctors AND banned women from seeking medical education to become doctors. This is a sure fire way to kill women. It’s beyond barbaric.

Moreover, Prophet Muhammad (sa) declared education incumbent upon women AND declared medical knowledge as the most worthwhile knowledge. Taliban extremists ignore that entirely—because they fear truth, justice, and empowered women.

Taliban are enemies of all humanity.

Just saw that @keepassxc is on the Fedi, and I had to go look up what the deal is with KeePass, KeepassX and KeePassXC. Answer here:

So *XC is the fork of the fork. Had this been a closed source project it would have been dead long ago.

There are plenty of abandoned #OpenSource projects but when a project is popular enough they have a way of enduring that is remarkable.
