that's not to say there's no potential security risks at all, just that they're not singularly specific to TikTok, and the people hyperventilating the loudest about this are bad faith bullshit artists with an abysmal track record on consumer privacy and protection
Turns out that integrating hooks into shell-scripts is really darn simple …
# on fail do default action
run_hook() {
[ -n "$1" ] && bash -c "$1"
}
export VARIABLE_WHICH_IS_USEFUL_FOR_HOOK="something"
run_hook "$HOOK_COMMAND" || default_action
It’s sometimes easy to forget that audio data is a thriving area of innovation, with both researchers and industry players making major strides in the ways we understand, process, and create sound.
This week, we set aside textual and visual data and turn to the world of audio and music to highlight projects and workflows our authors have recently explored. Contributors include Robert A. Gonsalves, Dorien Herremans, Max Hilsdorf, and Aleksandra Ma.

the TikTok hysteria is a manufactured moral panic by a bunch of self-serving Republicans attempting to force the sale of tiktok to their best friends at Oracle, Facebook, or Walmart
so we have barely any federal privacy laws in the U.S. but because lawmakers in the 80s were very worried about their 🌽 showing up on a list somewhere we do have one explicitly about *video rental* privacy and now that law is being dusted off to go after tracking pixels because like IT'S ALL WE'VE GOT https://gizmodo.com/chick-fil-a-lawsuit-fried-chicken-privacy-class-action-1850020692
“It’s like Musk is taking all of the content moderation best practice norms the trust and safety community has built up over the past decade and is trying to set them on fire,” @evelyndouek told us
In Georgia -- and other states controlled by Republicans -- protest is being turned into a criminal act. This is only the latest attack on democratic values and norms from a party that sees abuse of citizens, with impunity, as a key way of staying in power. https://theintercept.com/2023/01/27/cop-city-atlanta-forest/
Woke up this morning to find that #macOS had unilaterally decided to remove several of my frequently used folders under “Favorites” in the #Finder sidebar. Have to try and remember what was there and where it was now.
Gee, thanks, Apple. That’s just terrific — and it makes me feel so secure to know how reliable and trustworthy your software is!

@toplesstopics Not sure what you are looking for but for just editing and some effects, #Avidemux is free and relatively easy to use, though it does have a few annoying quirks that the developer thinks are perfectly fine. I believe #OpenShot is also free and is more capable but personally I did not find it intuitive or easy to use at all.
Belatedly, but better than never, the NY Times takes a look at Trump's "Truth" Social and -- you'll be shocked, shocked -- learns that when it comes to advertising it's slime city. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/27/technology/trump-truth-social-ads.html
The #California bar’s top disciplinary official is seeking the disbarment of John #Eastman on 11 charges related to his effort to overturn the 2020 election and help #Trump seize a second term he didn’t win.
Excellent summary of the NYT story from @AdamParkhomenko and @samyoungman's newsletter at http://todaysbigstuff.com
Arizona's Republicans are at war with democracy, and their latest act will give them lots of new ways to undermine it. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/01/26/arizona-legislature-transparency-open-records-law/
"It remains confounding to me that a person who tried to overthrow the government, and used Facebook to help him do it, ultimately got off with a two-year time out. Especially when much more benign users, notably sex educators, are routinely given permanent suspensions. At the same time, Trump hasn’t been held accountable by the US government, either. ... We find ourselves calling on Facebook to do what prosecutors so far have not"

Donald #Trump is unveiling a 2024 education policy plan that focuses heavily on culture war components.
The plan calls for:
👉 Cutting federal funding for any school or program that includes “critical race theory, gender ideology, or other inappropriate [...] content onto our children.”
👉 Investigating school districts that've "engaged in race-based discrimination," particularly against Asian American students
👉 Keeping "men out of women’s sports.”

I've been so excited about the explosion of new Mastodon apps that I decided to write about it in my column, with a focus on @ivory and @icecubesapp. A thousand flowers blooming!
