So you may have noticed that the Twitter login of movetodon.org/ is not working at the moment.

According to twitter, the app “has violated Twitter Rules and policies”. I can’t tell much more at the moment since the email they mention never arrived in my inbox.

Google likes to claim it loves the web. Google fucking broke the web.

Cookie notices on every fucking website? They need those because they use Google Analytics or Google Ads.

Recipe sites that go on for fucking days? That’s because Google penalises websites when you leave too quickly, and they can’t show as many ads.

Obviously-bullshit machine-generated “content” designed to entice you to click ads? That’s because Google Search is a monopoly.

I’m so tired of Google.

The proposed EU law Chat Control will not only create a centralized mass surveillance system and violate people's privacy. It will also ban open source operating systems as an unintended consequence.

If and when this law goes into effect it would make illegal the open source software services underpinning the majority of services and infrastructure on the internet.

Twitter's new policy will likely shut down thousands of #EMGTwitter emergency alerting and emergency management accounts.

Every time you reduce the methods of communication in an emergency you risk human lives and property damage.

#OpenSource #AI #SpeechRecognition #Whisper #OpenAI: "Whisper transcribes speech in more than ninety languages. In some of them, the software is capable of superhuman performance—that is, it can actually parse what somebody’s saying better than a human can.

What’s so unusual about Whisper is that OpenAI open-sourced it, releasing not just the code but a detailed description of its architecture. They also included the all-important “model weights”: a giant file of numbers specifying the synaptic strength of every connection in the software’s neural network. In so doing, OpenAI made it possible for anyone, including an amateur like Gerganov, to modify the program. Gerganov converted Whisper to C++, a widely supported programming language, to make it easier to download and run on practically any device. This sounds like a logistical detail, but it’s actually the mark of a wider sea change. Until recently, world-beating A.I.s like Whisper were the exclusive province of the big tech firms that developed them. They existed behind the scenes, subtly powering search results, recommendations, chat assistants, and the like. If outsiders have been allowed to use them directly, their usage has been metered and controlled."

For years I used a app but it stopped working when the decided that such apps should no longer be perrmitted access, so I just stopped reading - I have plenty to read on . But now that he's pulling the plug on API's I decided to just delete all my previous tweets. There are several tools that will do this for you but some only delete a few tweets and then force you to pay to delete the rest. But there is one called TweetEraser at tweeteraser.com/ that has a free eraser that will let you delete all your past tweets for free. Their interface isn't the most intuitive and you might have to click a few things to find the screen that lets you view and delete your tweets, and at first it will show a page of only 10 tweets. But if you check the box(es) to delete one or more tweets, it will asks you if you just want to delete the ones you have checked or all those it has found. If there is a limit on the number of tweets it will delete, I must not have hit it (then again I was not a profific tweeter).

TweetEraser also has paid options but unless they have found a way to get around the API removal, none of their options will work in a few days. So if you want to get rid of your past tweets en masse while you still can, maybe check out the free eraser at TweetEraser and see if it will do the job for you.

@rob_cornelius I think there are a couple reasons. First of all the people who were in the situations you describe may feel those lives were so uninteresting that they are not worth sharing, or in some cases they may even be ashamed of something related to that life. Whereas the ones who believe they were famous in a past life want to crow about it, and probably think people will find them more interesting.

But also, don't discount the probability that at least some of the people who claim to believe they were famous are just plain lying, perhaps hoping they can cash in in some way. Unfortunately in the society we live in today, telling the right lies to the right group of people can get you ahead. Consider the case of a certain Mr. Santos that has been in the news recently!

@mmasnick We have one of those "Recent Tweets" widgets on our website (which depends on the Twitter API). We've been wondering lately whether that was worth keeping. Elon has decided for us that it will go. We haven't looked yet, but We're 100 percent sure we can replace that with a "Recent Toots" widget. We can think of one or two other Twitter integrations that will probably stop working. No great loss.

"Twitter has thousands of outside developers who have built useful tools, games, and analytics on the platform that will now all have to be scrapped"

This is one of the risks that you take when building something on top of a proprietary system like Twitter. #FreeSoftware advocates have been warning about this for decades. Lesson learned this time?

Once upon a time I made a scoreboard for Canabalt with the Twitter API. You can still see it at capndesign.com/canabalt/. For over year, I worked at ThinkUp which only existed because Twitter and other social sites had an API.

I’ll miss all the fun toys people built because the API was free. Shoutout to everyone who worked hard to keep it accessible and I hope we build even cooler shit on Mastodon.

Censorship & BookBanning are dangerous precedents that can slowly erode our freedoms. In these turbulent times everyone needs to have the freedom to learn about the past, other cultures, and plan for the future. Reading a broad spectrum of Books and learning how think is an excellent way to do this.

We need to talk about allies, friends, and the differences therein. The war that we are fighting cannot be won by splintering into small partisan groups because of idealogical purity.

I will be the first to list my grievances with neoliberals. We share very little political cohesion. This does not mean, however, that I am unwilling to work with neoliberal candidates and movements to achieve mutual goals.

Just because we differ on long-term objectives does not mean that we are doing any good by arguing in the short term while fascists unite under a push toward authoritarianism.

We cannot allow the left to fracture into a bickering rabble. We must present a united front and work with people we may be ideologically opposed to in the service of stopping a greater danger.

If you disagree with this message, then I beg you to put ego and adherence to personal ideals aside until this crisis has subsided, because we ALL know how this ends if we don't.

@stopgopfox Self-admission: I am *extremely* liberal. But here's what I see being needed:

1) Progressives/liberals need frequently to accept less than 100% of what we want, as some is always better than none.
2) Centrist/moderates need to remember that popular, progressive measures get them elected and energize the Dem base, not pandering to conservatives for votes they'll never get. Enough with the 'bi-partisanship' fetish. GOPers can't be negotiated with in good faith anymore.
