@GatekeepKen @TeaPain

There's very few Republican billionaire donors funding sedition.

Around 63. That's manageable.

Most are elderly. Go after their sources of income.

Buy less gasoline. Switch to a heat pump. Go solar. Don't shop at Uline, Home Depot or Hobby Lobby. Protest pipeline construction. Don't buy Oracle. Support Ukraine. Stay out of the stock market. Support taxing the rich. Support laws restricting hedge funds & ending Citizens United.

There seems to be another wave of anti-remote working articles doing the rounds, including one that is apparently saying we need the commute home to psychologically switch off from work.

Since I have gone 100% remote I have never been happier. At the end of the day I lock my laptop, walk through a door and I'm home. I get to spend more time with my wife and boys, I'm not tired out from the stress of commuting, and at the weekends I want to get out and do stuff and I can afford to because I'm not spending on fuel or public transport.

I'm sure some people prefer to be in the office all the time. Some prefer to be at home all the time. Some prefer a mix. Why can't it be left at that? Stop with the anti-remote rhetoric and companies, if you're listening, the best way to get good people is to be flexible.

There are MANY MANY issues with #ChatGPT but this Daily Mail "science" article by their "tech correspondent" is just 🙄🙄🙄 on so many levels.
First the Daily Mail, an actual trash rag, has a "science" section..lolllll
And they have a "tech correspondent"... lollllll
The "culture war" BS is pretty on brand for them so talking about #ChatGPT being "woke" is pure💩 click bait

From: @pluralistic:

"To understand the future of Mastodon, we have to understand network effects...a product or service that gets more valuable as it attracts new users.

The people who stay...make it a busier, more exciting place...the next surge will find an even higher equilibrium as users who try Mastodon find more fully acclimated users who can hold their hands as they get settled in, and also provide the vibrant community that presents a good reason for doing so."

When a school board, a library or a state bans books, it’s not a show of strength. It’s a sign they’re ruled by fear. Fear of knowledge. Fear of opposing views. Fear of democracy.

@chucker Don't tell anyone but some of us are still using , it is the only decent MacOS software that still supports XMPP!

@chucker Oh, yes the preference works, I had just never found that before. Thanks for mentioning that!

@chucker @davemark Oh one other thing I forgot, when displaying images in the timeline if they are not a specific aspect ratio you chop off the tops and bottoms of the image. I cannot begin to express how irritating that is. I know some instances do that too, and it sucks. I wish there was a option that would either let you display the full image or a thumbnail, but even if it's a tumbnail I don't want the top and bottom of the image cut off unless maybe it is ridiculously tall compared to the width (maybe not let a 1 px wide by 100000 px high image display, but don't chop of the top and bottom of normal portrait images!).

@chucker @davemark The biggest one is that you limit toots to 500 characters even though qoto.org (the instance I use) supports 65535 character toots.

But the second biggest one is that the timeline jumps around so it is much too easy to loose your place. It is impossible to read the Public timeline, but even in your home timeline, as new messages come in it jumps ahead. This behavior alone is enough to make me never use . If I am reading a toot and I get called away and then come back an hour later or a day later or a week later, I want it to still be on the last toot I read, and allow me to scroll up and down from there. If you are not touching the mouse or the keyboard, the timeline should never move on the screen for any reason, and especially not as new toots come in. Most clients get this wrong to some degree but Mastonaut is the worst I have found for this problem.

Other things I would like to see are the ability to quote all or a portion of the original toot in a reply, the ability to edit toots after they have been sent (in case you make an error), and the ability to see a list of all the you are following and to add or remove from that list. But the first two things I mentioned above are the things that really turned me off about Mastonaut.

elon musk has figured out the one weird trick for not having to pay the employees you fired: make them sign arbitration agreements, then don't select arbitrators or pay the arbitration firms

"the company is refusing to pay its share of filing fees to the arbitration company... in cases where the arbitration agreement does not specify a particular arbitration firm, Twitter will not agree on selecting an arbitrator, simply ignoring her emails to Twitter’s own lawyers."

I’ve been a teacher in elementary school and an adjunct professor of education for the past 30 years. What DeSantis is doing with education is fascism pure and simple. And the College Board going along with the whitewashing of the AA AP courses is not only shameful and a threat to our country and to democracy! I’ve lost my faith in the College Board and any of us who are in this field need to make our voices heard!!

Gotta admit that my first reaction to ChatGPT as a college instructor was a mixture of fascination & dread. Now I am encouraging my journalism students to use and interrogate AI services as part of their education. Here's why:

OMG! It's like... surround sound... ?? Whoow... Wtf has #Linux been doing all these years?? :D #DistroHopped to #Ubuntu Mate 22.10. #PipeWire is awsome! No crackling, no losing the headset midflight, no bad audio or blowing my voip buddies ears out when switching profiles/drivers, discovering new capabilities out of headset etc.

Guys, if you run Linux and you use #bluetooth for audio, that pain in your ass, it might very well be fixed by firing PulseAudio and hiring PipeWire instead.
