holy fucking shit, Donald Trump's tax cuts for the obscenely wealthy are responsible for a QUARTER OF OUR NATION'S ENTIRE DEBT and Republicans want to cut YOUR social security to pay for it, and that's what this debt ceiling bullshit is all about. fucking unacceptable

Every time I talk about @Mastodon in one of my videos, I get comments telling me they couldn't figure out how to ue it, or that it's too complicated.

So, I mae a complete guide to #Mastodon: how to create an account, how to find people to follow, how to use it, and the general etiquette here!

(Of course, you all already know all of that, but now you have a reference guide you can share with people who struggle to join us here!)

Research papers increasingly refer to websites like GitHub for code, which may be a problem...

About 20% of preprints referred to GitHub in 2021. Yet, these web pages are often not archived, jeopardizing their long-term availability.

"The growing use of Git Hosting Platforms in scholarly publications points to an urgent and growing need for dedicated efforts to archive their holdings in order to preserve research code"

CEO pay of top 5 weapon makers:

General Dynamics: $23.5M

Raytheon: $21.8M

Boeing: $21.1M

Northrop Grumman: $19.9M

An ABSOLUTELY HEARTBREAKING message from a teacher in Duval County, Florida who is being forced to make her classroom library inaccessible as a result of @RonDeSantisFL@twitter.com's policies

(via @MelissainJax@twitter.com)

@ericgoldman So here is a brain twister for you. Let's say I start recording a video on a phone and then pass the phone around to several friends (while the original video is still recording) and we all take turns pointing the camera at whatever and then finally they pass the phone back to me. Who owns the copyright for that video?

It sounds like the court said that whoever is holding the phone owns the copyright. But copyright laws were imposed on us back on the days when the making of anything took a lot of mechanical effort. Think of the effort and preparation it took to photograph former president Abraham Lincoln in the 1860's, and compare that to the effort it would take to snap a picture of anyone today. When copyright law was created photographs didn't even exist, and when they did exist they were a rare and valuable thing. Now it is so easy a small child can do it, or even a monkey. Somehow I think the legal system needs to start recognizing the difference between then and now.

But then again, I have always thought all so-called "intellectual property" laws are an evil legal fiction that should never have been a thing in the first place.

FWIW, in the US, COVID was probably the 3rd leading cause of death for 2022 (we'll have to wait a bit for offical year-end numbers).¹

Food for thought: even if you aren't in a high-risk population, catching and spreading COVID likely contributes to some of those deaths.

This post sparked by having to remind folks of the above when doing event planning.

Religion

'Homosexuality not a crime' castanet.net/news/World/408105 but it IS a sin, according to the RC Church! Thankfully, “sin” is just as fictitious as the Bible. Humans hurt each other, sometimes intentionally. Blaming it on “supernatural” forces (aka Satan) provides a cop-out for predators - like the ones in the Vatican. Religion is a relic that is no longer required. #exchristian #atheist #SecularHumanist #lgbtq #criticalthinking #ReligiousTrauma

Cory @doctorow has an appropriately scathing blog post today about Moderna's staggering price hike on a lifesaving vaccine created on the taxpayers' dime. The scandals around this company's abuses are epic, but the worst is that millions of human beings will die SOLELY to satisfy corporate greed. pluralistic.net/2023/01/25/nat
