Three U.S. Marines were given highly sensitive intelligence jobs after participating in the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol. Two of the Marines received promotions, while the third posted support of the "Boogaloo" movement, a right-wing anti-government ideology which advocates violent overthrow of the U.S. government.

The bill's sponsor, on his creation:

"When asked in an interview with The Star if the bill would be broad enough to prohibit LGBTQ teachers from discussing spouses and potentially ban certain books, Moon indicated it might.

'Gender identity and sexual orientation conversations would be prohibited. If they think that would be included, then it likely will be,' Moon said."

Reminder: So-called "right-to-work" laws are all about weakening unions rather than giving workers more rights.

These laws keep wages lower for all workers in the states where they've been enacted.

Don't be fooled by the name.

In my most recent column for
WIRED I describe my experience with Mounjaro, a new drug for type 2 diabetics that deeply manipulates satiety, with a side effect of radical weight loss.

Fat is a vast subject involving economics, agriculture, race, gender, sexuality, cultural norms, psychology, biology, even climate. In contrast I'm relating an individual, fragmentary experience, in a state of confusion, at a moment of vulnerability. I'm sure it will go great.

@dangillmor I am going to say this as loud as I can anytime someone mentions E-Bikes - that is the one thing you will never foist of on most Americans, and when you try to push them on people you are just minting Republican voters. Look at the level of outrage when the Republicans pushed the lie that the liberals were coming for their gas stoves. You tell Americans you're coming for their cars and hell will have no fury like what you will see then, and that is the one issue that could precipitate a general revulsion toward whichever party proposes it.

Like it or not we are a car society, in part because most of the US experiences various bouts of inclement weather. Maybe you can get a kid to ride a bike to school in a blizzard in the dead of winter if his only other option is to walk, but no self-respecting adult in the USA will ever do that (well, maybe I should not say no one, there are probably people who would freeze to death, or arrive at work drenched to the bone just to prove a point, but it's not going to stop everyone else from thinking they're nuts).

Yeah, I know, people in Europe blah blah but they do have cars in Europe, but also people in Europe have much better and safer public transportation that can be used in bad weather and I'd also bet employers there are not as quick to fire someone if they show up a bit late to work becase they had to take shelter and wait for a storm to pass. And also I'd bet bicycle theft is not as big a thing as in the USA. And they don't have to go five miles to the nearest Walmart to get their groceries (if you can find a decent food store anywhere near an American downtown or in a rural area, prepare to be gouged on the prices!).

Last time I said this someone replied that the day would come when I would beg for a bicycle. And my reply was, no, I would beg to be shot in the head first, and I was dead serious about that. I have no quarrel with the people who want to ride bikes for fun or exercise, but even most of them only want to do that when the weather is nice (I'm not talking about athletes or professional racers, obviously). But the older you get, the less comfortable bikes get, and you will notice that most of the people who have it in their head that bikes are any kind of solution are under 50!

There may be a solution that is kind of like a bicycle that would work IF it is (or can be) fully enclosed (and maybe even have a heat source for the winter months) and IF you can EASILY carry a few bags of groceries and a couple of kids without spending more than 30 seconds securing them, and IF (this is the big one) the infrastructure improves so that bike riders aren't just moving targets for all the larger vehicles out there. Oh, and if you don't look ridiculous riding in one! There is no way that will happen in my lifetime, and probably not in yours.

Electric cars are something most Americans would accept in time. Bicycles (electric or manual) are not, at least not as a means of critical transportation! I think about the best you could hope for is something on the order of enclosed golf carts (but designed more aerodynamically) but those would still only be good for relatively short trips.

If you're looking for #privacy, the absolute best option is probably setting up your own #homeserver, but if you don't have the technical know how, the time, or the inclination, the next best thing is a #NAS!

These little things let you store files, photos, host websites, run containers, backup your computers, run office suites, all with simple GUIs, and can be cheaper than cloud storage.

Let's take a look at why you probably need a NAS at home:

We should do "pop up" events with no advance warning to distribute books in neighborhoods in FL and other places they've been banned! In & out before the Karens can alert DeSantis' or Huckabee98 brownshirts! Also see Brooklyn Library pinned post. It's heart breaking....To Kill A Mockingbird changed my life. UFB what is happening.

It is not good news that Mastodon usage has dropped after the initial surge. But it's understandable. Patience and persistence are needed, along with greater (it's coming) ease of use here.

Meanwhile, it's disgusting that journalists -- whom Musk attacked directly and is still in some cases banning from his increasingly right-wing propaganda machine -- have meekly gone back to Twitter.

In a way, it's not surprising. Which says a lot about Big Journalism in our era.

"In less than two months, Mastodon’s monthly active users climbed from 380,000 to more than 2.5 million. But not everyone stuck around. Mastodon’s active monthly user count dropped to 1.4 million by late January."

This was inevitable, it happens to any new service, people try it out and leave. The more important news is that Mastodon's real ecosystem grew over 3x in only two months. Every single one of those users is now an advocate for the ecosystem.

Keep pushing... 🐘

I don't buy the notion that teachers should take a wait-and-see approach to generative AI like ChatGPT and DALLE-2. These are not "early days." We're used to spending the semester teaching students to start a fire, and someone just invented matches.

We have to show students how to use matches to stay warm without burning everything down in the process.
