@davemark None that I have found, unfortunately. probably comes closest but it has its flaws, so I sill prefer running the web client in a browser window.

@kmj People follow guides they find on YouTube or in someone's blog where security is either an afterthough or not even considered at all. Most prople are not professional administrators and all they know is that setting up a server will solve some specific problem they have, and if the guide they are following never mentions anything about a firewall they are sure not going to consider anything that would make the setup more difficult than it already is. I blame the people who write these guides or put up these videos, although to be fair those folks often have no idea how to implement good security practices themselves.

Now is someone really is a professional administrator (thery are getting paid to set up such systems) then this is stuff they had better know. But many of them are either lazy, or (if underpaid and treated like an intelligent robot by their employers) even actively hoping the systems they administer get hacked! If your employer only pays peanuts and disrespects you and your needs at every turn, maybe you'd like to see them have to pay out millions after they get hacked, and since it is pretty hard to prove administrator negligence ("my employer never asked me to implement better security") chances are that administrator will find another job somewhere else. I am not saying all admins are like that but just as there are bad cops and bad judges and bad doctors, there are also bad professional administrators!

For those of you that have smartr TVs that show unwanted ads, note that in the Beta Lists section there is one for "Smart TV call home and ads" - Beta Lists are not included in the Everything list so you would have to add that list separately, but if you have a PiHole or similar filter setup that serves a smart TV, that might be a good one to try.

#TIL There are alternatives to Google Translate and DeepL that don't track you.

One option is Lingva, a proxy front-end to Google Translate. Another one is LibreTranslate. In contrast to Linva LibreTranslate doesn't rely on proprietary providers. Instead, its translation engine is powered by the open-source Argos Translate library.

You can self-host both, #Lingva and #LibraTranslate, or use one of the public instances.

Yep. And at some point I wish that the #opensource community of developers and contributors finally realize that #Google is NOT their friends (at all).

As Paul Krugman points out, the first thing people do when they get real money is they start buying time. They start hiring people to do things that take time. They pay premiums to go to fronts of lines.

Lawyer dies after his hidden gun goes off during MRI scan

Leandro Mathias de Novaes’ gun went off due to magnetic field in the MRI scanning room:

It's a superconducting electromagnet, mate. The metal detectors on the door aren't there for your explodey penis substitute, they're there because ferrous metals go ZOOOOM if they get too close to the high-Tesla field!

It's like the dipshit ignored the pre-MRI fact sheet/briefing.

"The denial of dignity to one segment of the political community, then, threatens the dignity of all. This was true for Douglass and his time — it inspired his support for women’s suffrage and his opposition to the Chinese Exclusion Act — and it is true for us and ours as well. To deny equal respect and dignity to any part of the citizenry is to place the entire country on the road to tiered citizenship and limited rights, to liberty for some and hierarchy for the rest."

👉👉 "Montana bill would ban teaching of scientific theories in schools"👈 👈

@ewdocparris My favorite would be anything set on another planet or in the future that is not dystopian. I just want to remain hopeful that someday, somewhere, things will be better, and that we aren't all going to revert to a near stone age civilization (but somehow, amazingly, with plently of gasoline to run internal combustion engines - I mean, give me a break, civilization is completely broken down and yet the refinerys are still working?).

My least favorite is anything related to horror. I am not a horror fan at all, so if your idea of sci-fi is people getting killed off in various gruesome ways then we have very different ideas of what constitutes good science fiction.

My favorite of all time was the old Stargate (sometimes called SG-1) TV series. I can't exactly say why except that it had a lot of the elements I liked and few I didn't. It was a shame that only the last few seasons were filmed in high definition. I sometimes wish they'd reboot that franchise, although I suspect if they did they would totally screw it up and come up with something not nearly as imaginative and entertaining as the original.

So, I thought I'd dust off the #SecretSciFiNetwork for a pair of questions.

What is your favorite #SciFi trope?
I mean what will you watch every time they make a movie about it?

And what's your least favorite SciFi trope?
What are you tired of or never really liked.

As always, please boost to reach as many science fiction lovers as possible, and include #SecretSciFiNetwork in your response.

And of course no gatekeeping, no arguing. Plenty of room for different takes.
