Sen. Hawley says he wants to ban TikTok for everyone in the U.S., where the app has more than 100 million users and a growing role in youth culture, information and free expression:

All the state-device bans have led to this, "the U.S. adopting a Chinese attitude toward the internet: We’re going to block things we don’t want you to see because everything’s a national security threat"

If you are a #FOSS software maintainer, and a large number of your users complain about the same thing over a prolonged period, and your response is that the software is behaving as designed and the solution is for the users to change rather than the software, then you're doing it wrong.
The right solution might not be the one the users suggest—you may need to get more creative—but it's DEFINITELY not to tell the users they're wrong.
(This isn't about #QT'ing, but also it is.)

BREAKING: Iowa's House has passed a bill to spend hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars each year to pay families' private school costs, a top priority of Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds.

"The private school voucher bill passed 55-45, with nine Republicans joining every Democrat to oppose the bill. It's expected to win passage in Iowa's Senate tonight.

Roughly half of Iowa counties don't have any private schools."

This is completing what Betsy #DeVos couldn't do as SoE. It's a clearly labeled plank of the #NAR
'S 7 mountain dominion theology, that is being used as a framework to install #Christofascism.

Did a bit of organizing in this growing Google Doc (now 25 pages, ha) of Fediverse and Mastodon feature ideas. This kind of thing makes me very happy -- people have smart ideas, are bouncing off each other, and collaborating.

We now have subsections (Browsing, Posting, Onboarding, etc) and a table of contents where you can browse all the ideas easily. I'd welcome more organization if anyone feels like hopping in and adding it. docs.google.com/document/d/1En

The GOP can't keep from telling us they want to both cut and "privatize" Social Security and Medicare.

When people say it out loud, listen.

@comatory COURAGE and INNOVATION. I hate how #Apple insists on pulling #macOS down to the level of iPadOS.

I have put #linuxmint on the machine of my parents for this exact reason. Its super stable and due to its rather conservative development approach the UI stays familiar them (low intensity users with Windows background). They will find their way around even if they only use the machine once a week.

It saved us a lot of money and my support effort mostly remains limited to major release upgrades.

Another sad moment from VA: “Virginia Republican lawmaker Tim Anderson just announced he is suing Barnes and Noble for selling books that promote LGBTQIA+ rights. It is no longer just about banning books in schools - they are now coming for private businesses.”

I’m reminded that before WWII VA had euthanasia laws on the books for the mentally ill and “sexually deviant”. Germany sent people to study them.

Always nice to see things like this.

Flexibit's Mac addressbook replacement, CardHop, just updated and two of the changes are:

* Added support to add Mastodon usernames to a contact card
* Added support to detect Mastodon usernames in the parser input

Problem is, these people are going to fill up our hospitals so that the rest of us can't get care when we need it. Like they've done during several of the COVID surges.

Maybe we should start a follow-up campaign to Catturd's. "You know what they give you at the hospital? MEDICINE. Stay away!"
