Retired Chem/Physics/Earth Sciences teacher. I'm interested in everything.
I like a good debate that introduces me to other perspectives. I don't waste much time with people who devolve to name-calling or insults, aside to call them out on it.
I think society performs at its best when we take care of others, especially the weakest among us. That means a strong social safety net, with "free" healthcare, education, and public transit. It's a dream, I know.
30+ years of explaining stuff to teenagers has left me with some habits... I'm not a mansplainer, but I *do* like to find ways to 'splain stuff to receptive ears 😊
I like dogs, cats, and astronomy pictures with a bias towards the shorter wavelengths (kinda leaves out all those lovely Hα pics 😄).
The first thing I look at when shopping for cars is headroom/legroom. Saves a lot of time.

Former Toronto mayors including David Crombie, David Miller and Barbara Hall have penned a letter to Mayor John Tory asking him to reject a bill that gives him power to pass bylaws with minority support. https://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2022/11/20/former-mayors-of-toronto-pen-letter-to-mayor-john-tory-urging-him-to-reject-strong-mayor-powers.html

Lack of pedestrians and cyclists in a neighborhood usually indicates lack of safety, not lack of need.

Seeing some posts talking about fediblocking turning Mastodon into a "filter bubble." No. We absolutely do not need abusive or fascist views to have a high level of intellectual diversity. Full stop. That hate can fester somewhere else.
After 20 years of social media, the experiment has been run. Hateful people are unconvinced by rational argument, so there's no point engaging with them.
This is a rotten, disingenuous, meritless argument, from A to Z.
Fascism is to be defeated, not debated.

Today we’ll vote on the motion to #BringBackMasks, a temporary measure to decrease transmission of respiratory viruses in @OCDSB@twitter.com schools. To anyone whose goal is to keep schools open, keep children and educators healthy, care for vulnerable populations, follow our lead. #WeNotMe

Yes, mask-wearing is a choice.
It is a choice to care about your community. It's a choice to count your neighbor's life and livelihood as more important than a minor inconvenience.
"People who need to wear masks will" -- well, for others to be out in public safely, you need to wear a mask. Public health is not something that can be dealt with on an individual basis.

Did you know:
If you've stopped wearing masks, you can simply start wearing masks again
@OkieSpaceQueen Hoo boy. The wolves will be eating him when civilization collapses 😄
@Rhodium103 I'm thinking in terms of things like "how many times will you participate this week" or "which of the following will you do this year? Form a study group/Get more sleep/Exercise/etc."
...planting the seeds!
...Still hanging around on the bird site, despite myself. Sometimes it's worth it. Check out this thread:

Good opinion piece on labour negotiations. Let's start with giving workers a reasonable living wage.

OntEd + Masks
Send all of my positive vibes to @nilikm and the OCDSB trustees as they vote tonight on a motion to bring back masks to #Ottawa public schools.
Thank you Dr. Kaplan-Myrth for all you are doing for our community, and our children, despite the backlash, hate, and harassment you are enduring. This can’t be easy. #CovidIsNotOver

"Please," said the man, "can you do magic to make me be kind?"
"No," said the witch. "Magic cannot change anyone's nature."
"So there is no hope for me?"
"You ask the wrong question. Kind is not something you are. It is what you do."
"Is it that simple?"
"It is that hard."

One of the best features of Mastodon is the ability to #mute *specific* posts.
Bored of seeing the same meme being boosted into your timeline again and again?
On the web interface, click "…" and then "Filter this post".
And, as a bonus, it doesn't go to training an algorithm!

Wielding a massive goth shield crafted from its own feces, this young tortoise beetle is truly an animal for our times.

@nt5tm Apparently it's a South Philippine Dwarf Kingfisher. I think I saw it in a Twitter post a long time ago, and grabbed the image because I liked the colours (and he's a redhead, like me 😊 ). Pretty sure those are the natural colours, not enhanced.
