My view last night after Argentina’s nuclear power plant Atucha went offline because a land-clearing fire affected power lines, leaving half the country (pop 46m) without electricity. Intentional fires to clear land for soy, cattle and gated communities burn everywhere non-stop, reddening eyes, burning throats. The press ignores it. Government response? It stopped publishing fire stats. Current summer is hottest in history of Buenos Aires, weather bureau said yesterday. No one carried the story.

@cosmicallyf Or putting the right cable in there, but trying to pull it out without squeezing the clip because you think it's stuck.

@JenX It's become evidence and that nothing is being done to address it makes it even more appalling.

The thing I’ll never get over is conservatives complaining they can’t say what they think anymore. Is there anything more inescapable in modern life than the ceaseless monotonous drumbeat of conservatives all telling all the rest of us everything they all think?

Just a detail of an amazing waterfall in Norway…somewhere…I didn’t write down the name 🙄

Me: What?
Martini: You were gone.
Me: Yeah...overnight.. it' not like you didn't have plenty of food and water.
Martini: But no wet food.
Me: You got some today.
Martini: Once. You need to give it to me again to make up for last night.

The administration of the abandoned Bethlehem Steel plant in Lackawanna, NY

Russia’s cheapest destabilization option is information warfare and corrupting foreign politicians. Though they are getting brutally beat on the Ukrainian battlefield, look for the Kremlin to once again attempt to collude with politicians in the US as 2024 approaches.

Mastodon feels more real than Twitter, somehow.

It’s slower to gain followers, sure, but it feels like every follower is an actual person, and not a bot, advertiser, pseudo-celebrity, or “lib-owner.”

The instances are…different, and gives a feeling having more, I don’t know, protection? Isolation? Not enormous? I know it feels different than being in the vast ocean of hundreds of millions of users. And, I think, in a good way.

Mastodon will never look or feel like Twitter. And that’s okay.

Walgreens won’t distribute abortion pills in some states where they remain legal

The chain confirmed Thursday that it will not dispense abortion pills in several states where they remain legal — acting amid a shifting policy landscape, with #threats from state officials and #pressure from anti-abortion activists.

Nearly two dozen Republican state attorneys general wrote to Walgreens in February, threatening legal action if the company began distributing the drugs, which have become the nation’s most popular method for ending a pregnancy.

The company told POLITICO that it has since responded to all the officials, assuring them that they will * not dispense abortion pills * either by mail or at their brick-and-mortar locations in those states.

The list includes several states where abortion in general, and the medications specifically, remain legal — including #Alaska, #Iowa, #Kansas and #Montana. For example, Kansas’ law that patients only obtain the pills directly from a physician is blocked in court.

@DavidGMorrison1 @brendannyhan DeSantis put Rufo on a university’s board of trustees, so he has been granted some power. https://floridapolitics.com/archives/579522-gov-desantis-taps-christopher-rufo-5-others-to-transform-new-college-of-florida-into-classical-college/

@brendannyhan Maybe Karl knows something that I don't, but I'm not aware of Rufo being an employee of any university. He's an activist that basically invented the fake threat, and branding of CRT, as the bogeyman for looney right wing droolers, but he's not in a position of power within academia. No doubt, he's dangerous, and his voice has a reach that it shouldn't.

@Saltssaltgirl Honestly, I could write similar things about you. Some of your toots are pure genius and brighten my day. I would totally consider becoming a hetero sexual just for you.

Russia, So Desperate for Armor, Is Digging Up Ancient Soviet Amphibious Vehicles

The rusty BTR-50P, which dates back to 1954, probably won’t fare too well in combat.
