👆This week I taught a class and at the end an autistic student approached me to tell me that she's autistic and that she might need assistance and sometimes leave to stim outside or to relax from the overstimulation. I told her that I've seen her stim and that watching her do that was a very good moment for me. I told her I myself was autistic too, but my social mask was too strong to be as free as she was and and she behaved like that was liberating for me as well. She cried.

During a 2019 trip to Paris, I took a day trip out to Arras to visit the Vimy Ridge Memorial. I took the train, which I almost missed because there was a transit strike in the city that day. I ended up having to walk to the train station from the hotel, which took over an hour... but I got there with five minutes to spare.

In Germany, teaching the Holocaust is mandatory.

It includes visits to concentration camp, museums, etc. They don't shy away from their own ugly history. Yet the kids aren't damaged; they're strengthened, matured, humbled. The U.S. needs to do same with slavery.

#today I attended the annual town meeting where our small rural community voted on just about every line item in the budget. People disagreed, sometimes strongly , but it was civil. Some things were pushed forward, some denied, and some explained in the simplest term’s possible so everyone had a thorough understanding.
This to me is democracy in its purest form, everyone has a voice, everyone has input, everyone who chooses to exercise it has a vote.
