@the_Effekt @GhostOnTheHalfShell @rbreich I helped our town (pop. 600) build a municipally-owned fiber to the premises network. It took 15 years, federal and state grants, loans, etc. but we got it done, with fiber running to every built or buildable lot and an initial “take-rate” of over 80% of premises. Backhaul to the greater Internet was initially via a state-owned middle-mile provider, and we are working with 5 neighboring towns to light up interconnect fibers that we all built to each other’s borders and to upgrade our routers to use distributed backhaul over multiple providers. That will save us a huge amount each month, because it is much cheaper to buy three 10Gbps backhaul connections than 12 separate smaller (1-3Gbps) backhaul connections, and will provide a much more resilient network (we each have 2 connections now on the state-owned middle-mile for partial redundancy).
