Marie worked as a cheesemaker, and became renown in her field for her production of Camembert cheese. She worked with a local abbot, Charles-Jean Bonvoust, and together they are credited with inventing that particular type of cheese.
Their work spawned a dynasty that became powerhouses in the cheese world (Harel's grandson built a cheese factory).
