I just saw this "feel good" story on CBS Sunday Morning about a 14 year old Black girl who gave birth to triplets. It focused on the white woman nurse who tended the premature babies in the hospital, and ultimately became the foster mother of all 4 CHILDREN. What? A GIRL was clearly raped and that GIRL gave birth to 3 babies in what had to be a dangerous situation. My mouth hung open as none of that was addressed, but we were all supposed to just be happy about the white lady.

Today I want to talk about revenge.

When someone harms you, slights you, or somehow brings bad stuff to your door - it's natural to want to exact some kind of 'price'.

"Revenge is a dish best served cold" or "Revenge is sweet" or "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned" - We love our revenge don't we?

When someone wrongs you there the instinct to take action to 'right the wrong' or make the other person feel what you're feeling is strong. I get it, I'm the same way.

A few weeks ago someone betrayed me. After a long and complex professional relationship, they decided to make decisions that harmed me while benefiting them. It sucks. I was hurt by it... I mentioned it here a little.

In that time I have started writing no fewer than three plans to exact revenge on my former friend. One of those plans was particularly delicious.

I never executed on those plans. Indeed, I never even finished thinking/writing them. They are toxic and shouldn't live in my head.

Revenge is toxic. Revenge is destructive and reductive. Instead of focusing on revenge - I suggest excellence.

Take all that energy, all that negativity and anger - and build a plan of excellence. Use that energy to accelerate past those who have wronged you.

Look back years from now and feel sad for the person who tried to bring you low. Pity them and celebrate what you've accomplished while they act out.

A lie can go halfway round the world while the truth has a paywall.
