UKRAINE SPRINGS A TRAP

The Russians having failed in the north to shift the balance decided as expected, that they would attempt to break the nearly ten year old contact line in front of the industrial plant in the central southeastern area of the Avdivka front.
Pounding the industrial area with artillery had reduced it to rubble over the last ten years and even more so since the war began in 2022.
Ukraine took a long hard look at its defences - automated machine gun positions in heavy fortifications are in multiple areas of the surrounding hills, along with trench lines in the old vineyards.
The forest to the north is fully controlled by Ukraine and is an area the Russians have assiduously avoided - they know it would be disastrous trying to get the Ukrainian forces out if it in a frontal attack.
Having then decided on taking the industrial zone they began their assault.
Heavy artillery pounded it again, the Ukrainians were however already gone, realising it was pointless sitting there being shelled and that the area was covered on three sides by their own forces. The Russians moved in, only to find the rubble they created provided no cover at all and there was nowhere to hide.
Ukrainian drones had spent much of the previous day isolating Russian artillery, suicide drones and HIMARS made scrap of them, cutting the Russians off from heavy artillery support, which they rely on when using primarily infantry.
The resulting death toll in the fire zone sent Russian casualties over the 1,000 level yet again. Most of the bodies were simply left behind as they withdrew.
While the area is now in the grey zone, Ukrainian control over the surrounding area makes it difficult for Russia to exploit it.

How many people here knit or crochet? (I know at least one person does.) I'm just getting started and need some advice on yarn, needles/hooks, and other tools. I read through about a dozen pages on https://sarahmaker.com/ yesterday, so I'm thinking of buying a cheap set of wood/bamboo knitting needles and a crochet hook, some inexpensive worsted yarn, and a few other tools, and just seeing if I can make an even rectangle this weekend.

Any other tips for beginner fiber craft?

I don't care what the Founding Fathers would have wanted, I don't care if Jesus was a hippie or not, I don't care what Marx prescribed. I can't take living in a world where we're all servants of long-dead men. You know what happens if you make a law the Founding Fathers wouldn't like? Nothing, they're dead and they're never coming back. I'm genuinely envious of countries that can just make whatever laws they want without worrying about how 18th century agrarian noblemen would have seen it. Stop arguing that Jesus loved the poor too, what he loved or didn't love is irrelevant, he doesn't get a say in any of this. We could have a country that isn't shackled to these ghosts if we collectively wanted to.

The number of times I've watched my trans colleagues who were women get used in their workplace for their faces and their identity and then tossed while their colleagues who were more male normative got the actual promotions and leadership positions is honestly pretty shocking.

I didn't leave Mormonism because I doubted. I left because I got curious, and the thing I got curious about led me to answers that contradicted the Church's story about God.

They've built all kinds of walls against doubt. "Doubt your doubts" is their current thought terminating cliché on the matter.

They've even built walls against being curious about very specific things.

But they haven't built any walls against curiosity in general, as a concept. If you can make a coercion victim be *curious*, you might get them to thinking. More importantly, if YOU can stay curious about them, you'll approach them with love.

Look, when I argue about politics on the internet, I'm angry. I'm bitter. I'm so full of rage I feel sick.

But this is because I KNOW we can do better. Be better. I can see how unnecessary and pointless all this bullshit and suffering really is.

All I want, is for the destruction and cruelty to stop. I don't give a shit about revenge. Real justice is about making things RIGHT, fixing what's broken-- not breaking more. I want the bad guys STOPPED. I'd love it if they could actually learn the error of their ways and all, but the important part is to STOP them, by dismantling the fundamental mechanisms that grant them the power to cause harm in the first place-- so the hydra can't just sprout new heads to replace the ones that get lopped off piecemeal. Starve it out.

We can do better than this. Life could be so good, so amazing, so beautiful, if we could just get the malice and greed out of our way. The art that could fill every space. The gardens. The community, the dancing, the joy. The food! Fresh air, clean water, birdsong, solutions and learning and celebration. Instead I see people shitting where they eat, tormenting the neighbors and relatives that could've built something wonderful and saved their lives down the line. Fighting for scraps of meaningless dominance and filthy lucre and forgetting what love is.

I don't enjoy arguing. I don't enjoy being the bearer of bad news-- I'm just trying to figure out how to effectively communicate the threats we're really facing, that most people don't see under all the propaganda. I wouldn't be this angry, if I didn't think we can make things better. I wouldn't be fighting, if I didn't have something to believe in.

I'm cynical as hell about the established and parasitic status quo that's killing the world, but I can see past it to possibilities its tawdry heights can't hold a candle to.
