Being disabled should not be a taboo subject. When a kid comes up and asks on a bus why you are using a mobility device, the parents should not always say “that’s rude honey!” and pull them away. The parent should ask if you’re comfortable with explaining. Personally, I love when kids ask questions. Their curiosity is SO refreshing. Education is key to normalizing disability!

Holy shit. In less than 24 hours, I have had two apparently earnest white dudes in entirely separate discussions suggest that maybe the best way to deal with Mastodon being a bad experience for many Black people is to have more Black-run instances. To which Black people would presumably move for safety. That is, their solution to white racism is segregation.

Not only is digital ethnic cleansing is one of the fucking goals of a lot of the racist shitheads, but this also makes it the job of Black people to clean up after white racism. Which is itself systemic racism. How about instead, white people take on the responsibility of limiting the ability of other white people to cause racist harm?

If you have to regularly announce that you’re better than other people, you’re probably not.

A lot of the folks who cover internet culture came up during this period. They were heavy Tumblr users, for example. They like memes and noise, the instant gratification of something new.

I think in many ways, Mastodon, while definitely not being a monoculture—far from it—plays into a very “blogosphere” mindset. A lot of discussion is happening here, but the mindset is more about building towards bigger goals.

Other networks do this too—Substack is a good example. But it’s uncommon.

I photographed this deer and her two spotted fawns dining on the greenery next to the vet's in the middle of town where I used to live. There was so much wildlife around there, that kind of sight wasn't uncommon.
