My mom has dementia.

I visit with her each day and we go wherever her mind wants to go. She struggles to remember the simplest things like the address of the house she’s lived in for 59 years or that she’s in a hospital and not a hotel where the staff are so wonderfully attentive.

For now, she knows who I am but I can see that I’m beginning to fray and fade around the edges. One day I’ll disappear completely as I lose her while she remains as sharp and in focus to me as she has always been.
