Re: From birdsite

@gooseThief@tech.lgbt Names should support mixed case, too. Heck, maybe just allow all printable Unicode.

Someday, Ꮔ🥏マ N'Namdï-DiMartino could order a package, and the shipping label would be correct.

...oh, who am I kidding? They'd *still* mess up on the hyphen.

clueless question

@axtlos "adding ~4 letters to anything"? Whatasdf does thatkjh even meanqazwx? (Am I doing it right‽)

Statistics

@hntooter This talk of percentiles reminds me of one of my favorite measures of central tendency:

Trimean = (Q₁ + 2Q₂ + Q₃) / 4

It's a compromise: more sensitive to skewness than the median, but much less sensitive to outliers than the mean.

Last month the Netherlands passed #RouterFreedom into law: all ISPs must let customers choose their own Internet hardware and still provide tech support at no extra cost. That little box is your home-internet gatekeeper, and now in NL it can work for you fsfe.org/news/2021/news-202108

@rickwayne

Lock-in and network effects are A Thing.

Much of that exists on the advertising side. Alternatives are starved for funding.

@Dice 7 was probably their all-time best, but 8.1 was still tolerable imo. Can't say the same of later versions.

If you want to help spread the word about the Fediverse, try politely asking your favourite sites, organisations or projects what their Fediverse/Mastodon/PixelFed etc address is.

Obviously not everyone has the time or the spoons to maintain social media accounts, but just casually asking for an address will indirectly let them know the Fediverse exists.

The more people that ask them, the more likely they are to find out more about the Fediverse and join :fediverse: 👍

@trinsec But that's the boring (correct) answer.

I think @axxss means back wings.You'd need new muscles for the new limbs. It's hard to imagine using those muscles because you don't have them. It's kinda like a congenitally blind person trying to imagine what it's like to see.

But I think the real question is how the bones would connect if the wings are on your back. Do they come directly off the spine? Or the ribcage? Maybe shoulder blades?

Best say, "search engine." It's been 7 years since Google was my engine of choice, since I prefer tools I can use more than they use me. @DuckDuckGo
