Much of what I do with #IronAge #Gold involves working with #goldsmiths & #craftspeople & thanks to this I know some of the best!
My torc-partner-in-crime, Roll Williamson, isn't on here, but he makes incredible #replicas for #Reenactors #museums or private #commissions. His #website is below...
Would also #recommend wonderful friends @PottedHistory @sallypointer @JamesDilley for truly excellent #archaeological replicas, talks, classes etc...
Close up of the filigree #torc from the #BlairDrummond #hoard which was found in 2009.
This torc is likely about 2300 years old and is very distinctive, unusually showing a very #European (probably #Greek or #Etruscan) style of #making . However, there's no reason to suggest it has to have come from continental Europe, as #craftspeople and #ideas were travelling all over at this time.
I'm still in awe of your chocolate torcs. I like to imagine that you misheard someone talking about chocolate tortes and decided to run with it.
As some of you know, as well as looking at #torcs & #gold, I also make #chocolate #archaeological #artefacts .
It's a #hobby, I don't sell them & often only make something a couple of times. I do it for the challenge!
Rules are it has to be 100% edible & can't have hidden props or internal supports.
As we're heading into the weekend, here's one I made earlier: a chocolate #replica of the #Netherurd torc, as it might have been.
...and to my knowledge the only replica of this torc ever made! 🤣
I'm new to Mastodon and still trying to figure it out, but I should probably start with an introduction! I'm a historic and contemporary archaeologist and PhD student in Canada. My research looks at the role(s) of #pseudoarchaeology in far-right #conspirituality (ideologies = New Age spirituality + conspiracy theories), as well as the #archaeology of conspiritual landscapes!
I was talking to Dad about scientific progress, and he mentioned reading about plate tectonics in New Scientist, as (almost literally) groundbreaking addition to make Continental drift theory the scientifically accept theory.
Similarly with what I learned about dinosaurs at primary school in the 1979s
@JohannaSaunders spot on
Hancock vent from bird site.
Just sharing this here because the thought of this man’s rehabilitation makes me want to smash things.
#Hancock
#Sickening
Decided to look at network stats again. There are 1M more people using #Mastodon today than there were on October 27.
Am I right in thinking that birds are not in the sauropod clade?
My engineering education was rather remiss in this area
@joannechocolat Speaking as an evolutionary biologist, it is my sad duty to inform you that mastodons are not dinosaurs ... but birds are! So Twitter is the dinosaur site.
Yes, I became active on Twitter due to Brexit a d then moved to Covid misinformation and later disinformation as I realized that even my basic skills could do the legwork and free up the experts
Nice area. I used to go there fairly often when at university in the North East
@sarf_london same.
like watching a beloved venue burn down with a supervillain in it. #Twitter
I’m old enough to remember when Elon f’kin Musk promised to end world hunger. That would have cost about $8billion.
But no,
He buys Twitter.
For$44billion
What an absolute waste of flesh.
