How many times have we seen and read about reassuring early signs throughout these past two years? Reassurances that have peddled false hope resulting in complacency? A few things. Again, this editorial holds such a low bar as focus is again placed on immediate (1)

Won. Yes, every life saved is a victory and achievement. But let us remind ourselves too of the fact that the pandemic isn't over. We still have a long way to go. Giving false assurances gives an escape from reality that will only slow down the momentum needed to gain bigger

This silver watch case is shaped like a skull - the jaw hinges down to reveal the dial. The skull is decorated with a floral pattern and a scene on the forehead featuring Adam and Eve with the snake. 17th cent. The UK's economy compared

The UK is doing...badly. Really badly.

Wonder what could've possibly contributed to this. Perhaps it starts with 'B'...

@SueASmith @skiptomyloulou I think it is that Starmer knows that we are not going to be able to waltz back into the EU.

However, "making Brexit work" would mean aligning more closely with the Single Market and would be the first step towards rejoining.

But actually campaigning to rejoin is probably the wrong thing for the leader of the Opposition at this time.

Why give the Tories culture war ammunition for something that a Labour government could not deliver within a single Parliament, and something that would need a referendum anyway? The environment needs to be right and needs to be cultivated.

This does NOT mean that we shouldn't campaign to rejoin... Just that it's probably counterproductive for the leader of the Opposition to do so at this time. Counterproductive because it helps the Tories and helps solidify the Brexiteer support.

Hi All,

🧀Version 5.4 of my adaptation of a Swiss cheese risk reduction graphic (not really a 'model'), applied to any respiratory virus but drawn and evolved during the COVID-19 pandemic.

🧀Story of the image up to ver4.2 is on my blog:

@mattgemmell fortunately for spammers and bots, they don't have to worry about that because they use stolen credit card info...

For those wondering about the availability (now and in the future) of archived Twitter data: The Library of Congress has the full record of the first 12 years of Twitter data, but they stopped full collection in 2017. Since then, they have only archived tweets deemed to be of historical significance. Here’s a white paper from them describing why they stopped full archival collection, and what they still collect.

@JamesGleick @pluralistic

Thanks, for a thought provoking read. A lot of it does make sense.

Superb potted economic history of our era. Marred only by the faulty (conventional wisdom) election prediction at the end. Cory! @pluralistic doctorow.medium.com/the-end-of

Another design consideration re: Mastodon is that it works well for ephemeral asynchronous communications, but for many reasons should not be counted on as an archival resource. Media attachments are periodically purged and may not be available after a week, or a month, etc. While some servers may try to preserve content forever, this may be costly and unsustainable. Creators, researchers should treat this as an ephemeral resource and make provisions for self-archiving anything important.

To this extent I'm really interested to know how the age breakdown of people on the #Fediverse. On one hand it would seem to make sense to me that most people here remember the "old internet" before the centralization and they're here to rekindle that flame of independence. On the other hand the youths are generally pretty up on this whole technology thing. I grew up on the internet and since then smartphones have become even more ubiquitous.

Breaking: rumours that Channel 4 have approached Nadine Dorries to appear in new reality series "I'm a catastrophe, get me out of here" have been vehemently denied by a spokesperson for Ms Dorries.

Hello to former twitter pals.
Thought I’d give this tooting a go.
Still figuring it out. Hopefully I’ll manage to avoid the pitfalls which beset my Twitter existence 😂

When I was a boy I spent entire afternoons imagining what it would be like to walk around inside the Great Pyramid at Giza.

Now there is an online virtual walk-through, *inside* the pyramid, from the Giza Project at Harvard. Astonishing.
