@sandehalynch I don't use screen readers myself but I tested a few when I worked at Manchester University. They will read out all the text, and add the word "hashtag" whenever they see the symbol. So "I use #Mastodon to #read #interesting #toots" would be read out as I use hashtag mastodon to hashtag read hashtag interesting hashtag toots. You've got plenty of characters to play with here so it's neater and less annoying for screenreader users if you put hashtags at the end or beginning.
@SuneAuken yes, but please put it at either the beginning or the end of your toot. Putting hashtags in the middle of your text is an unpleasant experience for people using screen reader tech. #DailyReminder #screenreaders

What do you mean by "his track record of saying one thing before an election and doing something completely different afterwards"?
"The rate at which human sperm counts are decreasing has more than doubled since the turn of the century, and the mean level has dropped below a threshold that makes conception significantly more difficult.
These findings are part of a new peer-reviewed study published today in the Human Reproduction Update journal that includes data from 53 countries and is the first meta-analysis to check levels in Central America, South America and Asia."

For #Russia to have a chance at a liberal, democratic future, @anneapplebaum writes, Putin must lose the war in #Ukraine, and his empire must die: https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2022/12/putin-russia-must-lose-ukraine-war-imperial-future/671891/?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=share

This is only my understanding, but there are lots of independent Mastodon servers that talk to each other, and the second @ is the instance name, so mine is @ParkinJim so the instance is "qoto.org"
Bad actors can exploit this too. If I come up with a hashtag that hasn't been used before, and I pump out content about it across a network of sketchy websites and have a few key figures use the hashtag and share it, that's all it takes to spread disinfo.
@ChantelPratPhD hi from someone who has also recently joined.

@Dunningkruger @The_Colbobs @catvaxlax @Madmixchaves@glasgow.social @kamado @JohnWest_JAWS @jneill I can do it individually
@Dunningkruger @The_Colbobs @catvaxlax @Madmixchaves@glasgow.social @kamado @JohnWest_JAWS @jneill
I think it depends on what your instance is set up to do. Mine is similar to Twitter's use of the at symbol

The UK could apply next week, yes, so could most countries in theory. However in reality, until the political situation has changed in the UK, other countries in the EU would not accept us. Johnson destroyed a lot of trust.
The UK is not going to be able to waltz back into the EU. And I really don't think Starmer is interested in Lexit. He's just not interested in fighting a war that has already been lost. We ARE out of the EU and it will take time to get back.
The first step is to make sure we realign with Europe, while we are still out but before we can rejoin.

Ideological purity. If the media wasn't against them, and if the pragmatists didn't get tired of waiting, then *this time* the British people will come to their senses and vote for their leader?
And yes, making a point for purity - and often from a position of economic privilege is a luxury
