Witold Pilecki, Polish army officer, voluntarily had himself captured #OnThisDay in 1940 so that he could be sent to Auschwitz, report on conditions & organize a resistance movement. After escaping, he took part in the Warsaw Uprising. He was executed by the Communists in 1948.
