While QOTO aims to provide a community where our users do not fear being punished for their personal opinions, that does not mean we allow people to disseminate ideologies that are abusive or violent towards others. Demonstrating support for or defending ideologies known to be violent or hateful is a bannable offense. This includes, but is not limited to: racial supremacy, anti-LGBTQ or anti-cis-gender/anti-straight, pro-genocide, child abuse or child pornography, etc. While we recognize questions and conversation regarding these topics are essential a STEM community, in general, doing so in bad faith will result in immediate expulsion.

1. Images of text - Imperative

Images of text are useless to a screen reader or refreshable braille display. Screenshots, highlighted excerpts from a long article or legal document, etc: ALL images of text must be accompanied by a transcription in text. You can easily obtain a scanned text version of an image of text using Google Lens, no matter what device, app or operating system you’re using.

Note, OCR is not 100% accurate. Once you extract the text & paste it into the ALT field, please take a few seconds to review it to make sure it's not only a one to one reproduction, but that it makes sense when read linearly, from top to bottom, for that is how a screen reader or refreshable braille display renders the contents of the description to the blind/VI individual: as a single string text. It can only be listen to as a string of spoken words. With speech, you can’t go back & review the description word by word or sentence by sentence as you normally would do with text content. If you interrupt speech, you must listen again from the beginning through to the end to obtain the entire description. This is an essential concept to keep in mind

A few additional notes on images of text & equivalents. If you visually highlighted part of the image of text, that highlighting will be lost in OCR. One strategy is to reproduce in the ALT only the text you highlight, since that is what you were trying to direct the viewer to; everything else that happens to be in that screenshot is immaterial to understanding the intent of the author in adding that screenshot.

For highly formatted text, or in the case of a graph for chart, the rules change, because you're not trying to convey the chart or the graph textually—what you need to do is present the findings rendered graphically in the graph or chart in a manner that will make sense when read linearly, from beginning to end. Don't describe the graph or chart, explain the data.

The vile and toxic shit I've been dealing with from outtside of QOTO has put my stress levels to a point I've never expiernced before... It is effectively my health both mental and physical. I am having trouble sleeping, and is very quickly moving from anxiety to depression to a point where it is very dangerous for my health..

My blood pressure is so high right now it would be enough to get me admitted to the emergency room alone.

The really messed up part is if all these lies and toxicity wind up killing me these people are so horrible they would probably dance on my grave....

Frankly im not sure where to go from here. But I do want to say thank you foe the overwhelming support from so many of you, it helps.

I don't want to post the 375th "guide to mastodon", but it took me a moment to learn what seem to me three most important points in making the mastodon timeline useful:

1) #follow absolutely every account you think could potentially be interesting (since no algorithm "suggests" anything for you)

2) #boost the toots you find interesting (not just favourite them)

3) use #hashtags as much as possible

Mastodon really gets me.

Call me a radically lefty, but I don’t think wealthy donors should be able to pay for access to Supreme Court justices.

So it seems joinmastodon removed QOTO from their directory without cause, without contacting us, and without any discussion or due diligence.

Since this is the only way to actually find QOTO for new users if it isnt reversed soon it could mean the end for our wonderful community.

If you care about this place remaining fair, respectful, and inclusive environment I highly suggest everyone reach out to them annd voice your objecttion and your disapointment and having no procedure to keep this fair and inclusive.

TBH, I don't really have strong feelings about the appointment of a special prosecutor. Jack Smith is surely a better pick than Robert Mueller, who by that point was just cruising through lucrative white shoe corporate law gigs. But I doubt it's going to provide the political insulation AG Garland thinks it will; it's all the same to Republicans, any investigation of Trump is inherently a witch hunt.
