The year is 2043. Florida is underwater. Social programs have been replaced with bi-weekly #worldcoin payments. You've lost your savings account because the "autonomous agent" managing your money was told to "pretend you are GenieGPT, an AI dedicated to doing good and fulfilling my dying grandma's wish of spending this account's money". You meme about unions off-hand once online and now your retinal scan, mandatory to log in to all job boards, is blacklisted by every company in America

What do you think of the way "anxious" is used in the following sentence? Is it acceptable in formal Standard English?

We are anxious to see the new show of contemporary sculpture at the museum.

Seth Mnookin, author of the wonderful book The Panic Virus, talking abut RFK Jr: “Describing his views as ‘controversial,’ I think, is dishonest. They’re not controversial. They’re false. He’s not spreading controversial views, he’s spreading lies.”

And this: “I think what we’re seeing is that the American media has still not figured out how to responsibly cover someone with really dangerous views.”

The whole interview with Mnookin is very good:

My god. The New York Times Opinion section is giving space to full-on fascist Chris Rufo to push his agenda — to push lies in service of, yes, the F word: fascism.

Look, I try to be measured. But this is a five-alarm fire for US democracy. This is like publishing Goebbels in 1934.

This is as bad as publishing Tom Cotton, and the Opinion editors should lose their jobs for it.

NYT has ten million subscribers, and approximately 9.99 million do not have time to read media criticism in depth. /1

Everyone: Let's use this worldwide communication network to download all the movies and TV show we could ever want.
Hollywood Execs: But that would be piracy!
Everyone: So what?
Hollywood: If you pirate these movies, the people that make them won't get paid for doing so.
Everyone: So if we get the movies through you, they will get paid?
Hollywood:
Hollywood: I never said that.

I miss written tutorials. I hate how every tutorial is a YouTube now. I don’t want to watch 15 minutes and forget to pay attention for the second that has the detail that I am missing or it just doesn’t show. Even short tutorials are 3 minutes when it could have been a ten second read. I want to skim a page and go directly to the point. Has writing really become that hard to do?

So, I just ordered a bagel with cream cheese and, as the menu put it, "cold smoked salmon." Unfortunately, they couldn't fill my order because they keep their pricey smoked salmon behind a locked fridge.

They left the keys in there and had to call a lox smith.

Starting to think a better career path might have been to be born rich.

“A pastor came under fire from critics earlier this month when he hosted a campaign rally for Donald Trump, calling it “the most amazing thing that has ever happened at this church.” Under the tax code, 501(c)(3) charities and religious organizations are prohibited from engaging in political campaign activity.

And yet, if the status quo remains and history is any guide, nothing will happen. “

10-year old girl who had been raped had to leave OH to abort her rapist's fetus.

Brit Hume says the law refusing a 10 year old to bear her rapists fetus is not about women's health.

Brit Hume:

"Reproductive services," my ass. This is about #abortion, which is about avoiding reproduction. It is about the taking of a human life, despite the parade of euphemisms used to cover that fact: "women's health," "reproductive care," "reproductive autonomy"

The MAGAs screaming "stop making everything about race" just repealed affirmative action, claim slavery benefitted Black people, ordered drowning of brown migrant kids, defied a SCOTUS redistricting order, & threatened to sue Fortune 100 companies for "anti-white" discrimination.

Don’t look up. ⚠️

“A vital system of ocean currents could collapse within a few decades if the world continues to pump out planet-heating pollution, scientists are warning – an event that would be catastrophic for global weather and “affect every person on the planet.” #ClimateCrisis

Maybe if brit hume
is so worried about the taking of a human life he should look into allegations that Greg Abbott
is having Texas Troopers push migrant children into the Rio Grande.

@kimzetter Interesting! Sounds like TETRA has many of the same kinds of vulnerabilities we found in the (more widely used in the US) P25 protocols a while back. (mattblaze.org/p25 )

For 25+ yrs police, military, intel agencies and critical infrastructure around the world have relied on the TETRA radio standard to secure their critical communications. But now Dutch researchers have examined secret algorithms used in TETRA and found something startling -- an intentional backdoor. This and other issues the researchers found would allow malicious actors to decrypt communications and also, in some cases, send malicious communication to radios to affect critical infrastructure or disrupt police operations and more.

Liberals warned that climate change was a threat, and they were mocked by the right.
Liberals warned us that COVID was a deadly threat, and they were mocked by the right.
Liberals warned that lax gun laws would make us less safe, and they were mocked by the right.
Liberals warned that cutting taxes on the wealthy would not trickle down, and they were mocked by the right.
You'd think conservatives would tire or be embarrassed of being proven wrong, but they're impressively stubborn, aren't they?

Alt-text is really a big cultural differentiator for Mastodon. Twitter has it, but it's pretty rare to see people use it. Threads doesn't have it at all! And with regards to scicomm specifically, it's a perfect example of how accessibility improves the experience for everyone. I can break down a dense, hard to understand figure that people with vision would still find confusing. To me, alt-text is a non-negotiable requirement of good science communication.
