@WarnerCrocker imagine having the power to save the world from the rise of Hitler, and then shrugging and throwing that power away because 'i need a reason to vote FOR Biden'

just unbelievably fucking spoiled

I think that fully integrating #ActivityPub into Flipboard's backend is going to be one of the best things we've done since we started the company.

There are three phases:

Phase 1 (Today): Federate 25 accounts to test and learn

Phase 2 (January): Enable anyone in the Fediverse to engage with any public curator on Flipboard

Phase 3 (April): Enable anyone on Flipboard to follow and engage with any public account in the #Fediverse

Quote-boost to add alt text and a rant:

[Image: a screenshot from..... a video game, I don't know what one. There's some people on a horse and some cars and shit. A Eurogamer headline beneath it reads "Sony patents ability for games to adjust difficulty levels on the fly"]

Somebody tell me why the fuck right now I shouldn't just pack it in and quit game dev forever. Shit's bleak

Something you can't unsee once you see it:

The Harvard alumns making the loudest noise about "Fair admissions" and not "lowering the standards..." are legacy admission babies. 🙂🙃

Wake me up when they start campaigning against legacy admissions.

For people outside the US: legacy admissions is where Harvard says "You might not meet our academic standards. But your parent or ancestor did, and that's good enough for us! Welcome to Harvard! Continue your legacy!" 🤡

Trump's fascist language and loudly stated intent to be a dictator should be enough for Big Journalism (and smaller outlets, for that matter) to dump business as usual. By the time they wake up to what's happening to our nation, and to them, it will be too late.

I don't believe journalism by itself can prevent fascism from taking over. But if democracy does prevail, we need journalism's active help -- and we need it right now.

Fascists are poisoning the soul of our country.

THAT is what’s really happening here.

Killing journalists via targeted missiles
Killing hostages waving a white flag via rifle
Killing Christians hiding in a church via sniper
Killing patients by burying them alive via bulldozer

All while Netanyahu proudly boasts he will never allow a Palestinian state😐

If IDF doesn't face justice and int'l human rights law, the atrocities will get worse. #CeasefireNOW

In case you ever wondered how CNN would describe Hitler’s Nuremberg Rallies…

#media #fascism

You can tell the GOP totally seriously opposes antisemitism by how their party leader incessantly repeats Nazi rhetoric while promising to be a dictator who cages people and in response they’re poised to re-nominate him for President & help him fulfill his fascist promises.😐

And this is really the black, rotting heart of the #EffectiveAltruism movement: It is nothing more than excuse to plunder the present for a highly hypothetical distant future.

Look, I am not saying that humanity won't ever spread out among the stars, assuming that we survive the present crisis - though I bet it won't be during these bastards' lifetimes (since the needed tech is nowhere available). However, if the actual goal is "more Mozarts and more Einsteins", then they could do far more for this _right now_.

Both Mozart and Einstein grew up in relatively privileged families who made it possible for their scions to follow their passions. In contrast, the Capitalist system that both Bezos and Musk encourage grinds most of the people working in it - especially at the lower ends - into the dust, creating a vast overworked and underpaid underclass.

How is human ingenuity supposed to prosper under these situations? How can a new Mozart or Einstein arise if their parents struggle to make meets end as a part of the vast supply chains Bezos and Musk are commanding?

If they don't take care of the people living right now, then why should we trust the ideology of these bastards to encourage the growth of the human spirit in the future?

They are NOT humanity's saviors - but merely an expression of the sickness of our times.

"Effective February 15, 2024, Google Groups will no longer support new Usenet content. Posting and subscribing will be disallowed, and new content from Usenet peers will not appear. Viewing and searching of historical data will still be supported as it is done today."

Google have been having massive spam problems with Google Groups spam, and it seems Google have decided to fix the spam problem by discontinuing the existing Google Groups usenet peering.

The comp.os.vms newsgroup and other groups have been largely or entirely unusable via Google Groups (<groups.google.com/g/comp.os.vm>) for a while now, and the folks administering usenet servers have been dealing with a flood of spam posted from Google Groups.

How long the historical usenet data—what was once the Dejanews usenet archives—will remain available at Google is unclear. I'd hope Internet Archive can get a copy, if Google decides to discontinue that archive.

Yes, usenet still exists, is still in use, and the archives of various newsgroups are still useful.

If I had my druthers #Giuliani coverage would be more interested in why it might have been worth it to him to risk a massive verdict to hide from his discovery obligations.

@Doppelganger75 @GottaLaff

I wouldn't describe it as "nothing"

Ukraine is seizing the oligarchs assets

The FBI has raided the homes and offices of Vekselberg, Muraviev, and Deripask.

Search warrants have been served at Giuliani's homes & offices, Roger Stone, and Jeffrey Clark.

The GOP response has been to defund the agencies investigating their donors, enablers, and accomplices.

Each time the GOP threatens shutdowns over the debt, that's what they are doing, thwarting investigations.

@georgetakei I see lots of under $3 gas in Iowa. The E85 is even cheaper.

The problem isn't we need more people to produce more Einsteins or Mozart's.

The problem is we don't nurture and protect the ones we have.

As Stephen Jay Gould wrote in The Panda's Thumb: "I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops"

Bezos and Musk have it deeply wrong.
The problem isn't that we need a trillion people to have more Einsteins or Mozarts.

The problem is we don't nurture and protect the ones we have.
