"Enrage your Opponent so they react emotionally, not logically, and the opportunities for a win increase"
This has direct ties back to tribalism/political identity issue. Partisanship has become a game where the objective is to become the winner, not to seek out the best policies with the best outcomes for the populous.

*Child-Separation Policy* - something that should be vigorously debated. But I don't think this policy was enforced out of personal racism of the President.
Progressive: Lots of Rules, Lots of Exceptions
Conservative: Few Rules, Few Exceptions
Progressive: There should be executive-level exceptions for the unintended consequences of bad law
Conservative: There should be legislative-level corrections to the bad law to remove unintended consequences
Common ground. Often very rare. (rarely observed, even though it nearly always exists) =]

@williamlweaver I beleive and hope that if you keep the caliber of your discussion to this level you will find we can have pretty productive conversations here.
Of course when people are less respectful it just tends to get you ignored. So even then I'd say as a community we do a pretty good job reaching across the aisle.
I always try to lurk on this sort of stuff just to help keep the maturity level maxed out, but rarely do I need to interject in that regard.
Great post, keep it up! ![]()
Reading more of the Paradox of tolerance on wikipedia shared earlier here on Mastodon. I'm on #qoto and Mastodon to choose *positive relationships with tolerant individuals of dissimilar groups*, not just *positive relationships with an intolerant group members*.

“anarcho-#communists”: “We are against the State but also want to use the State to make everyone give us all their stuff” 🤣🤣🤣
@SecondJon
Well either that or when you "see it" a moderator talks to the person first to get them to stop doing whatever the amoral act happens to be. As long as you don't insta-ban then strict codified and objective rules arent needed.
With that said not having objective rules can be a turn off to a potential new user since they dont really know if their personal expression is one that is later going to be held against them or if they will be demanded to stop later. Once they are already invested and a few thousand posts in they may not want to find out they are on the wrong instance for them.
@Surasanji
Well i think there is a difference between what is wrong and what needs an intervention.
I dont think suicide is morally wrong. It should be prevented however because I dont think it is what is best for the person, so trying to help them is a good move even if they arent morally deficient in their choice.
Just caught up on some fractured shard of the Wil Wheaton story.
- 60 reports/day are enough to overwhelm a volunteer admin
- dogpiling can be effective even when coped with by paid staff, historical tracking & analysis, carefully-written policies (see birdsite gamergaters & terfs)z
- the dogpile technique is therefore more effective here
- it's just proven its effectiveness against a celebrity target
Expect a lot more of it. 1/2
@freemo @commandelicious @Surasanji Some things are just unquestionable. I'm basically saying, I'll debate differing opinions all day long as long... as they aren't bigoted views. In real life I've had successful debates; a few months ago I even got a Vietnam Vet wearing a MAGA shirt to admit he'd vote for Michelle Obama. ;) I reject the notion that engaging with the other side is totally pointless, and I actually usually feel like a minority with that opinion in my real life.
@hashtaggrammar Can't argue with any of that. The lack of healthy debate in the USA is a good part of why i left.
@commandelicious @hashtaggrammar @freemo I have trouble understanding people who want to silence differing opinions because it makes them uncomfortable.
Personally, I'd rather know where people stand in relation to myself. It allows dialogue. Gotta face that cognitive dissidence someday.
I just got an official response from mastodon.social over someone from bofa trying to get us silenced for being free speech oriented.
I got an official response from the moderators over there and told #QOTO will NOT be silenced. They did not find any justification for the report.
Oh and stop it with the self-congratulatory circle jerk where you keep patting each other on the backs for fending off the bogeyman
And yes I did notice he wrote “CIS” in all caps and I’m sure some of y’all are ready to use that as further evidence he’s a transphobe or whatever, but I’m not going to hold it against him for making a common mistake in this context
I'm interested in being just not civil, but excellent in interacting with others of different viewpoints in an online world where we can so viciously defend our echo chambers and be so dismissive of other perspectives.
