@informapirata

A volte ci riescono, altre volte no.

as we talk about the morality of vaccine patents

i think it is a nice time to also remember historical precident

jonas salk did not patent the polio vaccine. he went out of his way to make sure it was not patented.

he never got rich. he actively made sure he didn't get rich off of it.

but that history is full of stories about how for the rest of his life, jonas salk did not have to ever pay for a beer in any bar in this country. he would get on airplanes and once somebody recognized his name, the entire damn plane would stand up and clap for him. he constantly had hotel rooms comped, meals for free at restaurants, thus and so.

because he was surrounded by people who knew he had saved their children from having to ever consider the fear of an iron lung, and were overwhelmingly grateful for it.

he was always modest and demure when recognized thusly. but i think that when people start saying "well why else would someone make a vaccine, if not to get paid for it and hold the patent", i think it is good to remember these stories. the world did not punish jonas salk for not patenting the polio vaccine. the world loved him for it. maybe not in the structures that billionaires are most used to. but they did love him for it, in small ways, in humble ways, on the individual level.

@frawi

The "community" is blaming them.

In fact, what they did proved an obvious vulnerability, but such proof is not worthless.

Why do you think that the is crying so loud?
It's always funny to look at the affiliations of the LF's board of directors and of the members of the Technical Advisory Board.

Because they proved to the rest of the world that they can be gamed by kids and that their security is can be easily subverted.

Roughly ten years after the scandal, despite all the money they spent...

@gubi

@gubi

@gubi

Who is more hypocrite here?

I'd say the Linux's leaders that, gamed like noobs, blame the hackers that outsmarted them proving that they rely on trust and that there is a huge lack of in the kernel development process.

They blame the hackers.
Easy target.

But the greatest hypocrisy here is pretending these scolars were the first to introduce vulnerabilities fooling them.

They were not.

@zwol

Why you talk at future tense?

If a bunch of University students got their bugs in the 's stable tree, it's plain obvious they were not the first.

Also I do not follow your reasoning: why they invalidated their result? How that would facilitate malicious attackers?

To be honest I think that the Linux developers should thank them for showing that such obvious risks were not just theoretical.

Instead, they stop accepting patches from that university.
