Which browser is consuming much more power than competitive ones? @3rik presenting interesting numbers and thoughts on #digital #sustainability in connection with #FreeSoftware at the @fsfe GA.

So, what's your guess?

Shamar boosted

@mxmehl @3rik @fsfe All I know is that there's far more code/features in all the browser engines than I'd like. I've looked.

@eff ayup. It's not a question of "do you trust the government?" but a question of "do you trust all possible future governments?". If not, it doesn't matter what decent people are *collecting* the data now.

the thing about blockchains is that they don't work *at all* in an off-grid scenario. i don't think there's anything to gain from excluding blockchain solutions from tracker, but they won't be in core because we want to have robust support for off-grid scenarios.

"With Category Theory, Mathematics Escapes From Equality"
"Two monumental works have led many mathematicians to avoid the equal sign. Their goal: Rebuild the foundations of the discipline upon the looser relationship of “equivalence.” The process has not always gone smoothly."

Free software doesn't have to mean a design free-for-all.

HTML is fragmented and has market share because Worse Is Better, and it has been very productive. But we are not talking about what's more productive.

We are talking about what's conceptually clean, usable and programmable for the casual end user, grokkable. HTML is not it.

With what we have learned from over two decades of web, we are armed with the knowledge to create a Better Is Better alternative.

> Its rich history reaches back to the 1960s with programming environments like Smalltalk and Logo. Notable successes since then include Unix, the spreadsheet, Hypercard, and HTML. And today, newcomers like Zapier, Coda, and Siri Shortcuts are trying their own approaches to automation and dynamic modeling.

> But despite forty years of commercial products, open source, and deep academic work, we have yet to reach an end-user programming utopia. In fact, the opposite: today our computing devices are less programmable and less customizable than ever before.

@zensaiyuki @Shamar then fix whatever shitty education system those people have.

people here know what a file system is and it's not like learning what one is is _that_ unintuitive.

and the belief that users and programmers must be strictly divided is fallacious.

should we also not expect them to be able to compare two numbers? or to read?

life hack:

you can just say "websearch" instead of "google"

there is more than one search engine

don't internalize the brands' language

tbh the main attraction of *nix systems is that they make composability available to the end user, not just the developer.

isn't it fucked up when we teach programmers to write composable and modular code, and then make them use those techniques to write closed source monoliths that only compete, and rarely cooperate?

there's some #programming food for thought....
