Heartbreaking scenes from my home state as #Monsoon2023 wreaks havoc across North India. The worst in decades, it's claimed 100+ lives & left thousands stranded. My younger brother sent me these videos that show the terrifying waterflow.
This isn't just weather, it's a climate crisis unfolding in real-time. 🌧️🌍
@Adrenochrome I ought to say that they are not as large as the ones in your pic, only say 100 microns or so at most. One of the technical managers on the steel works was a geologist, otherwise we would have not known their name, only their composition.

"Paradigm Shift: inflation, financial shocks and political crises signal fundamental change."
My latest Coppola Comment post includes links to the full text of my speech at Morningstar Investment Conference and to the shorter version in The Mint magazine.
@Adrenochrome We sometimes find these in steel, formed during solidification, though we've usually polished them flat when we see them under a microscope. Only rarely to we see any coloured versions.

"The present paradigm emerged from the twin horrors of World War II and the Great Depression of the 1930s. Now, as these events fade from living memory, the consensus that has maintained it for over 70 years is breaking, and the shadows of the past are returning."
My piece at The Mint on why the resurgence of #inflation , financial crises and wars signals that a paradigm shift is under way. Where are we going, and what will be the cost?

This is uncharted territory unfolding for humans on this planet, not just in a projection of a climate model.
“The world just had the hottest week on record, according to preliminary data,” the WMO said, adding that temperatures were breaking records on land and in the oceans, with “potentially devastating impacts on ecosystems and the environment”.

So... the eruption at #Fagradalsfjall 🌋 (#Reykjanes, #Iceland) has started, and I have put together some live #webcams of the area.
If you know any other that is relevant, please let me know here or on my blog.

I've worked in this area for the past two decades. Everyone's sharing this scary-looking sea surface temperature (SST) map but SST on the Florida Shelf aligns with what we expect in a warming world.
What's scary is our continued use of fossil fuels.
@freemo Another interesting fact - i can't think of a rejoinder which fits 'LASER'. It just shows how utterly worthless is a PhD.

A reasonable rule of thumb in UK #politcs is that if the Tax Payers Alliance doesn't like something, then it would likely benefit society;
to hear that they are against the four day #working week, leads me to think that the shadowy (corporate?) funders of the TPA are unhappy that #workers might be able to spend a little more time thinking about the inequities of the current system & a little less time being ground down by the world of #work.

My girlfriend has been selected to present a #poster at an international #conference in #astronomy, but does not have the #funding to go. She's inbetween masters and PhD, so neither institute can provide funding. Does anyone know if there are #travelgrants for a #woman #IndependentResearcher in #astronomy from #india ?
@freemo I used to make 1000 tonnes of bra reinforcing steel every month. Disappointing to hear that some some aren't taking advantage of it. Thanks for the tip off, I'll do some market research later.

Rishi Sunak told MP’s his illegal Migration Bill was LEGAL. Now a Joint Committee on Human Rights has published a damning verdict finding, as lawyers have been saying all along, it BREACHES A NUMBER OF THE UK’S INTERNATIONAL LEGAL OBLIGATIONS!
Why is UK media not all over it?
@freemo @TruthSandwich It seems odd to me, being in the UK. My gun wouldn't even kill rabbits very easily, although you can shoot at them in your own garden if you want to. Gun laws are tight here but silly in some regards. But making them harder to aim seems like a bizarre move.
@TruthSandwich @freemo Mine is defined as a pistol actually. Its stock is one of those removal wire things.
@freemo @TruthSandwich I should point out my error, 10 yards not years. Although the latter is plausible when you're standing in the rain.
