Rachel Carson was born in 1907. She became a marine biologist & prolific writer.
Carson questioned the assumption that humans should dominate #nature. She recognized the dangers to natural systems from the misuse of pesticides like DDT. She also accused the chemical industry of spreading lies & politicians of accepting industry claims uncritically.
Her 1962 book, Silent Spring, is widely credited as being the catalyst for the modern environmental movement. #history #science #HistoryRemix

@freemo And Epoisses is one that just has.
@freemo @nullifidian Prove it by basing it on an orthorhombic unit cell. No going for easy cubic options
@nullifidian @freemo You could also use a Burgers Vector based on clock hands, but you need to be a smart arse
Ok now that Lineker and the BBC have sorted out their differences, can we talk about the Government’s new Immigration Bill which is reminiscent of the laws of 1930s Germany? #Fascism #BBC #ImmigrationBill #IsBravermanAFacist?
"The gas boiler is our livelihood — if it gets banned, we have a real problem." The fossil fuel industry is fighting hard for its survival. Liquid petroleum gas firms want a EU directive to favour biofuels and hydrogen despite serious concerns over their viability.
Great piece by Fiona Harvey and Phoebe Cooke with quotes from me at @RegulatoryAssistanceProject
@freemo A tangent to the horizon. I still think it will be in constant alignment by some construction. You after Mystic Meg's role?😂
@freemo Two points "in alignment"?? Have you seen ones that aren't?😉
@freemo Alignment with what? I can only see those two.
@sciencebase Ask that chat thing for an opinion on that. It might also explain what a knob-head is, there are enough about in London.
@sciencebase I suppose if you try a penis-shaped dildo it says it is too much like an aubergine.
Make no mistake: History has already taught us in plain terms where this is headed if we do not collectively stop it in its tracks right now.
I am not an alarmist. I am historically literate, and we must all be in the face of this attack. https://statuskuo.substack.com/p/when-they-call-for-eradication-it?sd=pf
@sciencebase Yes. I borrowed a VCS3 once and it was the only thing I did with it. I think Roger used one for Welcome to the Machine. The original fart box.
@sciencebase A song, then? One which includes the sound of someone breaking wind.
All of England's rivers have failed quality tests for pollution… our rivers, essential to our survival, are choked with sewage and industrial chemicals ... ALL ... and this Tory Government allowed it ... Well encouraged it ... If you use water for recreational, like surfing you risk your health ... So preventable, but making profit got in the way, fly tipping on a grand scale ... Imagine if the gov allowed, on land, fly tipping
@freemo @mzan I see the point. We have a lot of cases where we have laws where it is hardly possible to prevent someone acting against them and then more laws about how far you can go to try. Speeding is an obvious one where we haven't given up but haven't banned driving yet. I don't know the answer and that doesn't surprise me.
Good morning!
Wonderful news to wake up to!
