@sciencebase Do you know why some butterfly imagoes are bigger than others? I mean, do they grow after pupating or is it all about the stages before that?

RT @PGDynes
The heat across most of Asia for April is insanely hot. The severity of climate change is being witnessed today- not 20-30 years into the future. Action on climate adaptation and mitigation is urgent.

@sciencebase I feel that we ought to have been taught that the notion of growing up didn't really apply to complete metamorphosis. It sticks in the way of understanding.

@sciencebase The thing I would criticise is that we were left with the notion that all such creatures were like Humans in that the flying stage was by far longest. We weren't taught about ones which spend most of their life at earlier stages..

@sciencebase I did about locusts at school. where they was a tank full, and learned the 'instar' word at about 11. Never knew is was used for any other form of like, though.

@sciencebase My books say only the third instar can overwinter, so it's near ready when it hunkers down.

@sciencebase Making sure it's ready for bonking time must be its priority I guess.

@sciencebase I don't know if it alters over Winter. Maybe it always does and that's why we find two stages at different times.

@sciencebase RAs do and some other big ones too. I think Speckled Wood is the only UK one which over-winters in one of two stages (not imago, I think egg or larva) rather than choosing only one. I've never read why it does this.

@sciencebase Rings true! They like it high up in my garage where the boiler is and look the same as a leaf stuck in Spider web, of which there are many. I don't get many other types over-wintering in there.

@sciencebase Do you know why they might have evolved their very dark underside? It's unique in ones that I find in the UK.

@sciencebase
Glad to hear. My physio said no more than use the exercise band like you were.

Well, looks like Team Takei let the cat out of the bag, but it’s true. Today is my birthday! Admittedly, I’m going to be a bit shameless because of the occasion and ask you to help me win a bet. I told Brad that since I’m turning 86, I could get at least 86 readers to upgrade to a paid subscription to my Substack, #TheBigPicture.

I understand many might not be familiar with the platform, so today's piece on The Big Picture breaks down the different ways you can support my Substack and help me win this bet (take that, Brad)! See you there: thinkbigpicture.substack.com/p

@sciencebase I took a trial long exp with a tripod of a small moth on the window inside, but it had the audacity to flutter off whilst it was having its picture taken. I never thought of that.

@sciencebase I think it would be convincing were you to have a pic showing how it's safe to have a big one sitting on your nose.

@sciencebase I saw/heard Andy Williams play it on OGWT once. Bit of a shock somehow.

@sciencebase You can't help but hear Stone Fox Chase but it goes with the wee ranny quite well.
