@freemo I'll always love Voyager. I used to watch it with my Mother, and I still treasure that time I had with her. She lives very far away now, so those kinds of experiences are worth more than gold.

The best, deepest, dialogues they ever had on Star Trek: Voyager.

Janeway: Let me ask you something. If you were something other than a human being, if you were a different kind of animal... If you were a small bird, a sparrow - what would your world be like?

da Vinci: I should make my home in a tree, in the branch of an elm. I should hunt insects for food, straw for my nest, and in the springtime, I should sing for a companion.

Janeway: And you would know nothing of the politics of Florence - the cutting of marble or mathematics.

da Vinci: Of course not.

Janeway: But why not?

da Vinci: My mind would be too small.

Janeway: As a sparrow, your mind would be too small, even with the best of teachers?

da Vinci: If Aristotle himself were to perch on my branch and lecture till he... fell off from exhaustion - still the limits of my mind would prevent me from understanding.

Janeway: And as a man, can you accept that there may be certain realities beyond the limits of your comprehension?

da Vinci: If I could not accept that... then I would be a fool.

Good news fellow members. I just finished upgrading the qoto source varient to pull in Mastodon upstream changes. The code base in github for qoto now has all the 2.7.0 changes incorporated while keeping the qoto modifications in tact.

The system admin team will now begin working on the upgrade itself. If all goes well we should be fully up to date in a day or two.

DaveTLV boosted

is now officially on 2.7.0, enjoy.

Side note. I also brought up a discourse server for us to use and will slowly be bringing up a/back a few other servers in the qoto family helping us promote and discuss STEM (or just chat).

If you want to play around with the new discourse server while we figure out how we want to use it you can sign up and use it here:}

ANNOUNCEMENT:

In about an hour or so the server will be going down to begin the upgrade process. This is a big upgrade so expect a longer than usual down time.

@spookcentral@cryptids.online Do school bus drivers get more?

Pointing out a racist with his cat's name.

Oops. Got into a little shit when I pointed out that Lovecraft was a racist with a cat named niggerman.

Shit got uncomfortable for others real quick. Unfortunate, really. Shut down the whole conversation.

@SquidPresident@cryptids.online SOme say he's still twitching madly to this day..

@cheyenne Most american men don't get it because of circumcision.

@MOTT @freemo @SecondJon @AtlasFreeman I can certainly understand the statement about not surviving on one's own.

I meant more that at that point of development, the fetus is more a part of the mother's body than it's own actual individual. It's just a bundle of cells, and thus, has no rights and is certainly not far along enough to be considered a person by any measure of the word.

The concept of what, exactly, makes someone human- that personhood- is a big philosophical thing.

In Judaism, for instance, a fetus isn't really a person until after it is born. The act of being born is what makes you a human being, religiously speaking as far as I'm aware.

That being said, most religious Jews are largely anti-abortion, except where the Mother's life is at risk. The life already existing, in that case, takes precedence. In a situation where you could only save the Mother or the Baby, you're supposed to save the mother.

Then again, you're also dealing with a group of people who don't even name a baby until about a week after birth. It's a cultural thing, that.

Moving back to the philosophical aspect of it, there are a great number of ideas and concepts at play there.

What are the rights of the mother vs the rights of the fetus, for instance? Who's rights are more important?

Where do we define personhood? Is it from the potentiality of a unicelluar zygote, or does it come later?

There are a lot of aspects to the abortion discussion that need to be understood before one could make a truly ethical, moral, and logically sound decision.

@M0YNG @freemo I can rent one at the range here, too, but there's something nice about having your own gun.

It gives you like a sense of agency and it's one of those things you hope you never ever need to use, but you're so very happy you have if that situation comes up.

I was also working as a corrections officer at the time, so, I kept a gun just in case someone from the prisons decided to bother me at home. A .357 Magnum revolver is a lovely way to say hello.

@freemo I can certainly understand your point of view.

I don't think people with conditions as serious as mine should have guns. I just don't think it's a smart policy to let people who's sickness might harm others given the chance have weapons that can give them the ability to do so.

But, I do totally understand your point of view and agree with parts of it.

@Surasanji While, if you do feel it is possible you could be a risk, I agree it is responsible for you not to own a gun, I do not agree with the law.

While I am not particularly bothered when im living in the netherlands by the lack of a gun, and I do disagree with the law, that isnt what bothers me so much about your situation.

The idea of using normally private mental health to dictate who can own a gun is fundamentally disgusting to me. The reason is important. In a situation like that if there is a person who didnt agree and insisted ont he right to own a gun, but felt they were developing a mental disorder, they would explicitly avoid seeking mental health since by doing so they forfeit their rights in a society. This in turn would lead to more harm than good, not only is the sacred confidentiality of doctor and patient violated but it acts as a force in society that makes mental health issues spiral out of control and the situation worse. Plus, stigmatizing mental health...

@freemo I'm in an odd place when it comes to owning a Gun. I loved my revolver when I lived in the US, sold it before moving here.

In Israel I can't own a gun, because I'm under treatment for a mental health issue and there is no 'need' for a gun.

I agree with it though, at least the mental health side of things. While I, personally, have never done anything violent or harmful to anyone else in my episodes that doesn't mean I couldn't if I had the means.

Still, I miss going to the range. That was a great way to spend an afternoon and have some fun.

After several more hours of cleanup the Prototyping SMT board I've been working on is finally done. I attached both sides of the board below.

Here is a link if you want to order a few for yourself. If anyone is really interested I can even send a few out for free to try it out: dirtypcbs.com/store/designer/d

I havent decided yet if I want to make this open-source. I probably will.

It can act as a simple breakout board for either a single SSOP-20 or x2 SOT-23-6 chips. To use it as a normal breakout just use solder to bridge the 20 connectors on the right and left and sides of the board and it will be a normal breakout (which each pin on the chip going to one of the header pins directly).

Here is the full description.

However there is also a SMT grid on the front and back so you can solder a full circuit onto the chip and arbitrarily have any point in the circuit wired to the various pins. Which makes for very handle little modules you can solder up and reuse.

I also added two power rails for ground and VCC down the middle with vias to both sides of the board. I also added other connectors around the edge that add in vias and wires connections to the opposite side of the board. Should be very useful.

One other little hidden feature is the spacing. Most of the pads are the perfect size to fit most two terminal SMT components (x4 0603 components can solder onto a single pad). But because the pads down the middle are offset it is also very easy to solder on SOT-23 connectors that have 3 terminals. So you really can solder almost any sort of SMT components on here.

Next step will be to build a larger protoboard that can accept modules like this and similar to create more advanced circuits.

Attached are images of the top and back of the design.

@freemo Neat stuff. Always interested in this kind of stuff.

I should learn how to do something with all this neat stuff one day.

@freemo @SecondJon @AtlasFreeman I feel like either life is valuable or it isn't.

At the same time, there are questions of personhood. At what point does a fetus become a person? At what point do we consider it a human being with rights?

In the first few weeks, surely not- it's just a bundle of cells that certainly can't survive on its own, right?

After birth, absolutely- not a fully, mentally developed person but a person none the less.

That in between time, though. That, for me, is where the ultimate question lies.

It only gets more complicated when you start talking medically necessary abortions. Do the rights of the existing life to continue living trump the rights of the potential life to begin living?

As for the Death Penalty, I'm mostly against it except in the most heinous of cases. It should be a punishment of very last resort, rarely if ever used. In an ideal world it never be used- but it's always nice to have it in your back pocket in case someone comes along that really needs to be removed from the population.

I feel like this is a super complicated thing that can't be easily put through a meme.
