CWed for Length, Re: Israeli News infuriating a local.
Israeli English news media is sometimes infuriating.
https://www.jpost.com/Israel-News/The-most-vegan-army-in-the-world-568595 - I'mma tell you the truth here. I don't give a hot damn if soldiers are vegans or not, as long as they're eating well and being given what they need.
https://www.timesofisrael.com/israeli-court-freezes-deportation-of-us-student-over-alleged-bds-links/ - Okay, why was her visa approved if they were going to turn her away? What kind of bullshittery is this? Personally, I don't give a shit if she was associated with BDS if she's here to study. Let her study. Let her be educated here and make a decision for herself. We can't bitch about a boycott from scholars when we're sending students away. Luckily the courts are like 'WTF is this bullshit', and I hope she gets to study here.
https://www.haaretz.com/middle-east-news/palestinians/.premium-15-palestinians-said-injured-in-clashes-with-israeli-military-on-gaza-border-1.6529111 - This shit is getting out of hand. This situation is so fucked. Why are children on the border? Why are soldiers firing in their direction? This shit is infuriating.
@neverfadingwood Yeah, it seems like something I'd like to read.
@neverfadingwood What kind of ransom? Do you have anything you can point to, in regards to Monsanto? I had read quite the opposite, that small time farmers tended to make more money with GMOs than not, due to the fact many have much higher yields for the same amount of work/cost.
@Surasanji Yes the bigger problem is from interbreeding early on. The scenario would be, say, a modified species where one of many modifications is beneficial in the wild and the other factors is not. It passes on that gene through interbreeding on one of its children but not the other qualities. that child may pick up that gene and spread it.
Again this hasnt been much of a problem yet, and generally most species arent at high risk of this like corn (which rarely even grows in the wild). But it is the only legitimate concern I can think of.
@freemo I was doing some reading on 'wild escape' from some types of GM Corn and Wheat, and typically they are out competed by wild strains because of how they're engineered- like to have herbicidal resistances.
Those resistances suck up energy and in environments where there aren't any herbicides the environment those plants without the resistance out compete the others.
But, you are correct. Domesticated species do not, typically, survive well in wholly wild environments.
@PJanuszka As always with this sort of email, Don't Panic.
They probably pulled the password from one of the many data breeches that have occurred in the past five years. If it is a password you still use, change it. Do not otherwise interact with the scammer. :)
@Surasanji I am a huge GMO supporter for all the good it has brought to starving people. The only legitimate risk I can see is if those species escape to the wild and out-compete native species. With that said for crops it is a non-issue since they rarely grow well in the wild.
My tasks list right now... I have to finish the documentation website (REST API still missing), I have to finish the Conversations API (it's mostly about the UI part now), I have to finish report source blocking, I have to finish fixing link verification for remote accounts...
And that's just the currently in progress stuff, I have 5-6 items on the 2.6 roadmap I haven't started on yet.
Okay, coffee ingested.
Goooood Day #qoto and #mastodon !
I hope you'll have a wonderful day today. It's another lovely day in Tel Aviv- the heat is finally starting to bleed off and it's super comfortable outside today. I'm feeling good, always a bonus.
So, #RandomQuestion for you find peoples today: Genetically Modified Organisms- specifically crop plants: What's your opinion?

@freemo Oh, he's got *every* right to be angry. Every single right, particularly if we assume that this didn't happen, or didn't happen as described.
Either way, the way he's been treated is pretty trashy and he's got the right to be upset.
But the manner in which you behave given these kinds of stressing events- given this kind of legitimate anger- is very important when you're talking about someone who will be appointed for the rest of their life/career to a position that dictates law and acts as a check and balance to the other two branches of government.
I do not, personally, believe that Brett Kavanaugh has behaved in a way that indicates the maturity and self-control required for a Supreme Court Justice. SCOTUS justices should be the kind of people who think before they speak.
This whole thing is a circus and a shitshow, sure, and wider investigations should be done- but I'm just not feeling that I can trust Kavanaugh to make rational, dispassionate decisions based on just and honest interpretations of the law. His behavior just doesn't feel appropriate to it.
For instance, his interchange between himself and Sen. Amy Klobuchar. That felt childish more so than borne of anger. The whole process has been peppered with little things from Kavanaugh that call in to question (Again, for me and in my opinion) his ability to be a member of the SCOTUS.
Ruth Bater Ginsburg is s awesome, and right. Even she thinks the Kavanaugh trial is a partisan circus and uncalled for. What is going on with the partisanship is plain wrong, she is right. Democrats AND Republicans should be ashamed of themselves.
Hear her comments for yourself: https://youtu.be/AriOjUfbBrw
So, we're well past the initial Kavanaugh engagements and I can say one thing- the man's behavior during all of this is enough for me to say he doesn't belong on the US Supreme Court.
I was on the fence, before, but now watching how he's acting and the things he's saying- and most importantly the WAY he is saying them makes me believe he's just not Supreme Court Material.
I have a certain expectation of the people on the highest court of the US. Brett Kavanaugh does not meet those expectations.
@freemo
Hope you feel better soon.
