You can’t cook porridge in Russia without panic: prices for buckwheat and rice are expected to rise in autumn
Buckwheat in Russia may rise in price by 150% by the end of winter. In a number of regions, there is already a boom, and cereals are disappearing from the shelves of large supermarket chains.
We tell readers @Pravda_Gerashchenko why Russia is facing a probable shortage of long-term storage products.
Following the rise in prices for medicines, gasoline, alcohol, strategic products such as buckwheat and rice will also rise in price in the fall.
Factors affecting price increases
▪️ weakening of the ruble;
▪️ the end of the season;
▪️ the volume and quality of the crop;
▪️ increase in freight rates.
In addition, the failure of the rice harvest associated with the destruction of the Fedorovsky hydroelectric complex in the Krasnodar Territory, when huge plantations of rice paddies were left without water.
How much will prices rise
According to experts' forecasts, by September 2023, the wholesale price of buckwheat may exceed 45,000 rubles, and rice will grow from 78,000 to 82,000 rubles per ton. Wholesale prices will pull up and retail.
It is expected that by September the price of buckwheat in stores may rise by 3-5%, but by the end of winter prices may rise by 1.5 times.
It is more difficult for experts to predict price growth for rice. To combat the “deficit and rise in price”, the government of the Russian Federation introduced a moratorium on the export of rice and rice cereals until the end of the year.
So we expect that from September the quest “take the last bag of buckwheat / rice” will begin in Russian stores.
