The Ukrainian Air Force has reported that since 9:00 PM on May 17th, 2023, Russian occupiers have launched multiple waves of missile attacks from various directions. A total of 30 cruise missiles were fired from sea, air, and land. Strategic aviation aircraft (two Tu-160s and eight Tu-95s) launched 22 X-101/X-555 cruise missiles, six Kalibr cruise missiles were fired from ships in the Black Sea, and two Iskander-K cruise missiles were fired from ground-based tactical missile systems. The Air Force, in cooperation with other components of the Ukrainian Defense Forces, was able to destroy 29 of the cruise missiles, as well as two Shahed-136/131 strike UAVs and two reconnaissance UAVs. We would like to remind everyone that even if air defense is successful, the fragments of missiles shot down in the sky can still fall to the ground and pose a serious threat to human life. During air raid alerts, please follow safety rules and take care of yourself and your family.
Today, May 18, on Vyshyvanka Day, the streets of Kyiv were filled with people wearing traditional Ukrainian embroidered shirts. Despite the threat of Russian missiles, Ukrainians celebrated this beloved holiday with joy and enthusiasm. Today I have the privilege of making this address to thank our brave soldiers and units who have been defending our nation since the start of this week. I would like to express my gratitude to the 3rd and 5th Separate Assault Brigades, the 28th Separate Mechanized Brigade named after the Knights of the Winter Campaign, the 44th Separate Artillery Brigade named after Hetman Danylo Apostol, the 55th Separate Artillery Brigade Zaporizhzhia Sich, the 59th Separate Motorized Infantry Brigade named after Yakiv Handziuk, the 79th Separate Airborne Brigade, the 406th Separate Artillery Brigade named after Lieutenant General Oleksiy Almazov, and the 63rd Separate Mechanized Brigade. I thank you all for your strength in positions and battles, your accuracy and courage, and for inspiring the whole of Ukraine with your bravery. I also want to recognize the 1st and 14th Operational Brigades of the National Guard, who are defending our country in Donetsk and Luhansk regions. I thank you for your resilience and for pushing the former second army of the world lower and lower in the list of military forces with your intelligence and artillery. I salute all our soldiers
