Is there any way to persuade the Federated timeline to only load the most recent fifty (or whatever) toots when I click the "xxxx new items" button? If I haven't touched it for a while and I come back to 4,800 new toots, trying to load them crashes my browser.

I can't work out how to reset it to an "I just opened this and it just loaded the few most recent" state, other than completely closing my browser.

A battery filled with algae is somehow managing to power this computer for months: newscientist.com/article/23195

No-one's quite sure what's going on. Possibly the algae is serving as the medium catalyzing the interaction between the anode and cathode in the battery.

Except research shows the anode isn't degrading, which suggests ...

... the *algae* is producing the electrons.

Some thoughts on this in my blog post here, item 6: clivethompson.medium.com/lavaf

Needed some pictures to illustrate a semi-serious presentation, so I finally gave Dall-E 2 a shot, and what can I say, the Hacker Cats of Dall-E are quite good.

Super Star Trek, which I have converted from the original 1970s (80 column printer terminal) source code. Now for the #Commodorer64 with some sympathetic enhancements such as NAVigation and TORpedo helpers. It's not perfect, but getting there. Still deliberately terminal based!

Why the birdsite matters

Historian Thomas Zimmer puts the the Muskification of the birdsite into a broader context.

' Twitter has enabled people with absolutely no traditional access to power to speak to powerful elites directly, criticize them in the public square. How valuable this has been is evidenced by the fact that many of those elites are so consistently bemoaning “persecution.” '

Really interesting example of the evolution of the English language. Old English really is a foreign language!

I did some more work on #DOStodon, the #Mastodon client for #MSDOS.

I added a splash screen, a busy indicator for network access, you can scroll the entries now, there is a profile viewer and you can like and boost.
Image attachments are now displayed, too.

My boss, Matt Mullenweg, the boss of Automattic, owner of Tumblr, is looking for ex-Twitter employees for Tumblr, saying,

"we're putting on a fast track to see how they can help super-charge Tumblr. We can't absorb thousands of people, but I'd be open to hiring entire teams if they already work great together."

He's photomatt on Twitter, or look here too: automattic.com/work-with-us/
