Other apps can—and should—exist on the Fediverse.

Mastodon doesn't have to "win".

The Fediverse isn't an "all or nothing" game where one VC-backed startup crushes everyone else.

Some apps have unique features others don't. Others set themselves apart with a kickass UI/UX. And others work on minimal resources so it's inexpensive to self-host.

And the great thing? All these apps can talk to each other.

There are no holy wars here—just an exciting bazaar of neat ideas.

Automattic is one of the most important companies on the Internet.

They make Tumblr, WooCommerce, Amismet, LongReads, WordPress—among others.

WordPress alone powers ~44% of the world's websites.

More interesting: despite being such a large, dominant company, few people hate Automattic.

Why is this? 🧵

EU countries using 20-40% less natural gas than same time last year. Good, but a lot of this is not structural: industries reducing production, warm weather reducing heating demand, burning oil instead of gas in refineries, etc. Strong drive needed for structural reduction, by eliminating waste and improving energy efficiency.

A typical European car is parked 92% of the time. It spends 1/5th of its driving time looking for parking. Its 5 seats only move 1.5 people. 86% of its fuel never reaches the wheels, & most of the energy that does, moves the car, not people.

I’m sure North American, Australasian, vehicles are similar.

How do we tax unliquidated asset value increases? In there surely lies an answer to a fairer taxation system? People (especially very rich people) are sitting on squillions of £ of inflated assets which cannot be touched by the exchequer until they are sold.

Just an oddity to end the evening. This white bird, photographed a week ago in our back yard, is a gold-crowned sparrow, like the other birds in the picture. It's a leucistic sparrow rather than an albino as it does have some coloration on its wings and the eyes are not pink.

We've seen it a couple times since, but we don't expect it will live long, as every predator in the area can see it from far away.

So a toast to all the white sparrows among us. May you escape notice when necessary.
